LAURAL CANYON

VA - Laurel Canyon (A Butterboy  Compilation) (4 x CD's)

Laurel Canyon is a mountainous neighbourhood located in the Hollywood Hills district of Los Angeles, California. It is a paisley gash that runs from Schwab’s on Sunset to the suburban San Fernando Valley, and Topanga Canyon is a dusty-woodsy pass leading from Malibu Beach to the same suburban sprawl.

Laurel Canyon was a rough and rustic area made up of just a few cabins some used as hunting lodgesThe hillside region was developed by Charles Spencer Mann, an engineer and investor who built the nation’s first trackless trolley there in 1913.  With the birth of the film industry in 1910, it attracted a host of movie people, including Tom Mix, Clara Bow, Harry Houdini and even Bela Lugosi. Many of the English Tudor- and Spanish-style homes built around this time survive in the Canyon today, while some were burnt down by careless rockstars.

In a counterpoint to all this modernism and development, the rustic style of turn-of-the-century Laurel Canyon was rediscovered by musicians during the 60’s and 70’s. Laurel Canyon was second only to Haight-Ashbury as a Mecca for Hippies. This is where many artists poured their heart and soul into deeply personal songs. With its proximity to the Sunset Strip, Laurel Canyon was also the drug-friendly, party playground.  It was also, crucially, where businessmen such as Asylum’s David Geffen and Elektra’s Jac Holzman were content to run their labels and develop their roster.

The scene is associated primarily with attractive brooding singer-songwriters writing heartfelt, confessional albums about getting off with other attractive brooding singer-songwriters, who, in turn, wrote heartfelt confessional albums about the experience. However, it was also a fertile breeding ground for country-rock.  For the most part, what they all have in common (Frank Zappa being a notable exception) is that mellow, laid-back South Californian sound; a product of the warm climate and the beautiful surroundings.  (Wikipedia)

The Canyon is one of rock music’s most fabled locations.  I hope you enjoy these 88 tracks from the Laurel Canyon music scene.

  5. Indeed, the meeting place Laurel Canyon has been a stroke of luck for the history of pop and rock music, when I consider the list of residents there. And that is impressively proven once again with this wonderful collection, for which I say thank you again!

  13. Where did you get the inspiration for a Laurel Canyon compilation? Great idea wherever that came from, and an even greater comp!

I have long been heavily influenced by the music and lyric from this group of artists. I gotta say, you did pretty well in representing the major players. You have Spirit in there too, from their 1st album, but not the obvious choices of "Topanga Windows" or "The Great Canyon Fire In General", also from that album. There were other artists I heard were a part of this scene as well, Leon Russell, John Sebastian, and Hoyt Axton come to mind. I think of Hoyt as more of a composer than performer, although he was both. Hoyt certainly had an influence on Three Dog Night, although not in the tunes represented here. I'm thrilled Karla Bonoff was included. Saw her in the 70s. We spoke briefly and took pictures more recently. I so much love her work. Clear Light was classic, somewhat unknown, their only album being produced by Paul Rothchild of Doors fame. The great Nicolette Larson was not unknown, but so underrated. I didn't know Brewer & Shipley were part of the LC culture. They had nice tunes, outstanding harmony.

Pertinent and well-presented remarks from Graham Nash.

and his "Lady Of The Island" is such a beautiful song, just sayin'.

Really glad you put this one together BB! Should be a big hit with the gang.

    1. Hi mrRadio,
I really enjoyed pulling this together and have listened to it many times now. The are a few artists not included ,not for any reason, other than How far do you go to make a good compilation. I have plans for a supplementary companion CD ad will include some more artist that may not have lived in the canyon but are forever associated with it. People like Carly Simon for instance, also the people you mention.

Thanks for directing me to the youtube Graham Nash - Our House. (He still aches telling that story)

I remember when I first heard Karla Bonoff, I was in love, I have her music and often pick her music to listen too. I love the songs "If He's Ever Near", "Home". In fact the whole self titled album is great. It her voice, her gentle emotion and clarity that I enjoy.

      Cheers.

  15. Really nice set of songs on a subject I suggest some time ago. Worth the wait. Thanks a lot, Butterboy. I just finish the reading of "Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll's Legendary Neighborhood". It was both happy/sad times, the end of the "we can change the world" dream of the 60's/beggining of the "I just believe in me" decade, alongside the corporatization of rock and the spread of glimmer..

    1. Hi Guilherme,
Thanks for your kind words. I really hope you will enjoy this set oftrack lists.
We all have our dreams, and dreams become bigger when many people have the same dream. Where the aspiration is strong some success can be had and along with change. Musicians do have a big responsibility in sharing the vision. Whatever institution music sits in it is still the peoples strongest asset...
      Stay safe and enjoy life.

      Cheers

  16. Since you've been posting music documentaries lately, I strongly suggest one of the two on the subject: "Hotel California: LA from The Byrds to The Eagles" (marvellous, BBC), or Laurel Canyon (also excellent, in two parts).

    1. Thanks for the suggestions Guilherme,
I nearly coupled the two part Laurel Canyon series with this set but decided it could be posted later. I have already shared the movie previously. The Hotel California.. will be a good one to share.

    2. HI BB.. I did not understand "I have already shared the movie previously." in your above comment.
Should I be looking for something? As far as I know you've never posted the two movies mentioned.

Also an FYI ... noticed "To Claudia On Thursday" twice at #63 and #79. Probably didn't mean that.

    3. Hi mrRadio,
I posted the series when it first came out, in the comments section, Please don,t ask me which date. (???). I never posted it on this blog. If you would like it I can offer it to you.
I also posted it at another site on request.

Oops! on the repeat of To Claudia On Thursday. I must have been a little Cloudy on that Thursday when I posted it. Would you like to suggest an alternate track, and I will update the post. I hate making mistakes like that...🤔
