JAZZ INSTRUMENTALS

VA - Jazz Instrumentals (A Butterboy Compilation) (3 x CD's)

Wynton Marsalis said "The real power of Jazz is that a group of people can come together and create improvised art and negotiate their agendas... and that negotiation is the art"

Ornette Coleman said "Jazz is the only music in which the same note can be played night after night but differently each time."

Gary Burton said "Improvising musicians are musical travelers, voyagers. There is a freedom to wander the musical landscape."

These are the feelings I have listening to Jazz. The instrumentals here have as many flavours of jazz as there are pebbles on a beach, but the majority combine rhythmic invention with instrumental virtuosity to create a sound that can transport the listener to a different plane. Whether your ear is caught by the saxophone, the flute, or effervescent keyboards or scatty drums, one thing is certain, the jazz instrumental still reigns supreme.  I hope you enjoy these selections.

  7. OK.... What scale ya wanna use? How 'bout 5 Stars outta 5!
A truly inspired cross section of jazz instrumentals... that intend to use as "an Introduction to Jazz Classics Everyone should know" for people under 50.
I would only change out one selection... If you Google The Vince Guaralidi Trio 95% of the entries are for his Peanuts Christmas album. Don't get me wrong, it's a really good LP.. BUT for anyone under say 40 years of age that's all they know. The Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus LP (and of course "Cast Your Fate To The Wind") would have been my selection here.
On the other hand, I did smile at your selection of "A Remark You Made" rather than the more popular "Birdland" from Weather Reports "Heavy Weather" album.
As a side note, when you have time listen to "The Juggler" and look at Michael Parkes painting "The Juggler". I like to thing he was inspired by that song.

    1. Hi Freddy,
Your selection of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" is a great choice too. I always enjoy that track.
My plan for my compilations is to always mix the known with the unknown (?), with a smattering of my personal favorites.

I love the way you think and explore the possibilities... The Juggler (Weather Report) really does suit the surrealistic work/mood of Michael Parks work. Lots of bright moments and with space where it counts. Stories for the mind.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Truly appreciated.

      Cheers

  9. Thank you for this. I love Jazz but am a Rocker at heart. You can't have everything and these comps you make give a great opportunity to experience a little bit of everyone. I also downloaded your Blue Note comp. These are great for a cross section listening experience. Thank you for all of your TIME and WORK. Believe me; I know this is not done in just a few minutes.
