K's UK No.1 SINGLES SPECIAL

VA - The Complete UK Number 1 Singles: 70 Years of the Official Singles Chart 1952-2022 [2022] PART 3 - 1970's

So here it is... EVERY single to hit the UK number 1 spot on the Official Singles Chart over the past 70 years in this blockbuster collection!

November 14th this year will mark 70 years since the first singles chart was published by the New Musical Express’s Percy Dickins in 1952, topped by Al Martino’s 'Here In My Heart'.

The UK Singles Chart is a weekly record chart which for most of its history was based on single sales from Sunday to Saturday in the United Kingdom. Since July 2014 it has also incorporated streaming data, and from 10 July 2015 has been based on a Friday to Thursday week. As of 14th November 2022, 1,404 singles have reached number one. The chart was founded in 1952 by Percy Dickins of New Musical Express (NME), who telephoned 20 record stores to ask what their top 10 highest-selling singles were. Dickins aggregated the results into a top 12 hit parade, which was topped by 'Here in My Heart' by Al Martino. NME's chart was published each week in its eponymous magazine.

Way back in 2004 I bought a single DVD-R on eBay which contained every UK number one single from 1952-2003. It was a great start to my ongoing collection which I've been adding to ever since.  Unfortunately, back in 2004 when the DVD-R was compiled most of the tracks were of poor quality at very low bitrates of 128 and below, plus many of the tracks were the incorrect versions: longer album tracks, live versions, later re-recorded versions, etc. Several were damaged or distorted mp3 files ripped from crackly, scratched old 45's, with quite a few with the beginning or the end clipped off.

Over the past 18 years I've slowly replaced a huge percentage of the tracks with much higher quality versions.  Since this year (2022) we're celebrating 70 years of the official UK singles chart, I decided to revisit my collection and pretty much recompile everything from scratch.  It's amazing just how many incorrect versions were initially included, so I made a concerted effort and through extensive research to include every UK number one hit in the correct original UK 7" single version as the songs appeared on the charts at the time. All double 'A' sides are included, along with a few EPs.  Now, most of the tracks feature the highest quality, and best sounding digital remasters released to date, far superior to the original collection.

Hope you enjoy this amazing compilation of over 1,400 number one singles from 14th November 1952 to 14th November 2022. The complete 70-year collection has been broken down year by year into folders. It would amount to an 80 CD set as it currently stands at 3.5 days, which is 84 hours' worth of music!

  2. These are excellent. Our US counterparts would require some of these years to be a 2-CD set.

  4. K, this is nothing less than magnificent. The 1970s was the decade I started watching Top of the Pops on Thursday Nights with my older sister; great memories. Looking forward to the 1980s now, and my teenage years. Thanks K and BB. Keep the magic coming. SPx
