K's SPECIAL -

VA - Sophisti-pop: 214 Soul, Jazz, New Wave Classics (Super Deluxe Edition) [2023] (12xCDs)

Sophisti-pop was a popular genre in the mid to late 1980s and early 1990s that expertly mixed soul and jazz music with new wave textures like synthesizers. While the genre certainly had crossover hits, it was most popular in Britain, where the music was almost exclusively made. While the idea of the genre frankly, sounds rather unappealing, I find the genre cool and, well, sophisticated. It’s fashionable, smooth, and intricate, with most of the songs being well-crafted and lightly funky. The best songs in the genre aren’t pretentious or too smooth and boring, keeping just enough of that new wave edge to provide flavor and intrigue. A cousin of soft rock, sophisti-pop is a lot more fashionable and synth-based, as well as being far more British.

Bands like Simply Red, Sade, ABC, and Pet Shop Boys popularized this genre and kept the sound alive for quite some time, but unfortunately, it didn’t last. Thankfully, the genre has been steadily making a comeback, with popular bands like The 1975 making tributes to this classy and smooth genre in recent years.  The term has been applied retrospectively to describe acts who blended elements of jazz, soul, and pop with lavish production. Music so classified often made extensive use of electronic keyboards, synthesizers and polished arrangements. Artists also utilized cutting-edge studio technology and perfectionist recording methods. The genre has been described as mellow, romantic, and atmospheric.

Stylus Magazine suggested that acts were influenced by the work of Roxy Music (such as 1982's Avalon, often cited as the first sophisti-pop album) and Bryan Ferry's mid-1980s albums, Bête Noire and Boys and Girls. Sweetwater named major artists in the genre as including the Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout, the Style Council, Scritti Politti, Everything but the Girl, and Danny Wilson. AllMusic added Simply Red, Sade, Basia, and Swing Out Sister. Writer Iain Munn added to the list Level 42, the Blow Monkeys, and Joe Jackson's 1984 album Body and Soul.

For genre highlights, Roxy Music's Avalon, The Beautiful South's Welcome to the Beautiful South and 0898 Beautiful South, The Blue Nile's Hats and A Walk Across the Rooftops, Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen, The Style Council's Café Bleu and My Favourite Shop, Simply Red's Stars, ABC's The Lexicon of Love, Scritti Politti's Cupid & Psyche 85 and Sade's Diamond Life and Love Deluxe are all considered sophisti-pop masterpieces.

  2. I really like Sophisti-Pop. I have my own compilation of it, but it's only three CD's long. I see a lot of doubles. I'll check if I have any that don't overlap. If i have enough, I'll come back and post more. Some of these I put in my "cocktail hour" pick instead of Sophisti-Pop, but you say tomato and I say tomato. It's all the same, let's not call the whole thing off. Beautiful job, K!

  8. I didn't realise they'd actually thought up a name (albeit this century) for the void between the punk / new wave / mod revival era and Britpop and of course it had to be one that is pretentious and contrived because most of this I consider simply mainstream pop.

I actually lost interest in the pop scene of the mid/late 80's because so much of it was so mundane and self indulgent and if I was going to make an observation it is that this collection whilst full of perfectly pleasant pop songs doesn't really represent any particular movement at all but artists and an industry trying to make money and perhaps searching for a new direction (even Weller had lost his edge). Not only that but if you've got Roogalator's 1977 gem 'Love And The Single Girl' you've pretty much got the formula for many of these songs. I'm not sure I could listen to much of it in one go; maybe a CD each month?

Still hat-tip to K for digging out Tracey Thorn's worthy rendition of 'Paris Match' which originally only appeared on a (b-side?) of a Style Council EP, I believe? And for persevering with documenting what was one of the least impressive periods in UK pop music (no wonder it didn't really catch on elsewhere).

That said, just because it was the lull between two storms doesn't make it any less valid historically....

    1. Hi Manny,
‘The Paris Match’ featuring Tracey Thorn on vocals was originally included on the album Café Bleu. Café Bleu is the official debut album released by the band The Style Council in March 1984, reaching number 2 in the UK charts. It followed the compilation Introducing The Style Council, which was released only in Holland and Japan. Café Bleu was renamed My Ever Changing Moods in the United States to capitalise on the success of that single. Café Bleu included a large number of extra musicians, known as Honorary Councillors, including Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt from Everything But The Girl.

The B-side version on the EP À Paris included French lyrics towards the end of the track and was sung by Paul Weller. Paul originally wrote the song for leading French singer - Suzanne Toblat.

The Paris Match Paul originally wrote for leading French Chanteuse Suzanne Toblàt, who recorded it with a French lyric, though it has yet to see a release.
