Bear Family’s 'The Drugstore’s Rockin’'. The idea is that you go into any drugstore or soda pop stand after school sometime between 1958 and 1963, and you’ll hear tunes blasting out of the jukebox that reflected the teenagers’ lives. The songs might have been punched up one after the other. Some were hits; most were not. But they all said something about how teenagers lived and thought and loved in the long-gone Fabulous Fifties…which as we know, didn’t start until ’55 and didn’t end until ’64.

The Drugstore's Rockin' Volume 1 shows whats in store. Just three weeks before Janis Martin's 16th birthday, she wrote and recorded a song that just about encapsulated the rock 'n' roll era, Drugstore Rock 'N' Roll. Those carefree teenage years and that great teenage music come to life once more in this exclusive series talking about teenage life, teenage love, and teenage heartbreak. Vol. 1 not only features rarely reissued hits like Sue Thompson's Norman, John D. Loudermilk's Angela Jones, and The Four Preps' Big Man, but ultra-rare classics like Barbara Evans' 1959 original version of Souvenirs, Jackie DeShannon's 1958 recording of Buddy, the LeGarde Twins' Rock 'n' Roll That Hula Hoop, Paul Evans' first release, What Do You Know, and Duane Eddy's buddy, Jimmy Dell, singing Oh, Oh Baby. Twenty-six tracks in all. Every one of them a little slice of teenage life circa '58, '59. The other 3 volumes here are just as impressive.

Bear Family presents some of the best Rockabilly artists ever to record. There are few charted singles in here, and some may seem out of place given the overall theme (e..g., The Four Preps and Boots Randolph), but the 26 tracks recorded from 1956 to 1962 (three of which were not previously released) will satisfy all those who love the raw, largely unpolished Rockabilly sound.  Enjoy!
