FALSETTO

VA - Falsetto in Rock (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3+CD4

What Is Falsetto ? Falsetto is a male singing voice that's unusually high. ... Falsetto is a musical term for a male voice that's artificially high. Falsetto means “artificial voice” and comes from the Italian word falso for “false.” When men suddenly sing way up high above their speaking voices, it can sound almost fake.  (https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/falsetto)

Falsetto in Italian means 'a little false.' It is produced with only the edges of the vocal cords that are stretched open rather than using the full cords and is pitched much higher than the normal range for a male singer. It also has a hooty or breathy quality rather than a full resonant one and involves an abrupt change in register. For these reasons, many voice teachers consider this type of singing to be fake or even unhealthy because it can lead to vocal fatigue and take away from the smooth, flowing musical phrase desirable in many kinds of music.  (Wikipedia)

After listening to a singer have you ever wondered if the singer is a man or a woman? What you were probably hearing was a man singing in the falsetto technique.  Falsetto is a method of voice production used by male singers, especially tenors, to sing notes higher than their normal range.. There are many great falsetto voices in the music we listen too. From soul and Motown to modern rock, the falsetto vocal technique has been in popular, often found in emotionally fragile music.

You will notice that my list is almost entirely made up of male singers. The men all sing in falsetto which makes it sound like a woman's voice. I often hear woman singing in falsetto so I asked the question "Do females have falsetto?" and found that it is an established fact that women have a falsetto register and that many young female singers substitute falsetto for the upper portion of the modal voice. The sound for a female modal register, and their falsetto register is quite similar, so it is often not recognized as falsetto even if it is. No disrespect to the women who use this vocal technique to sing. This is possibly another compilation to pursue.

There are more than a handful of falsetto's that have captivated our ears in modern music so here is my list of falsetto flavoured voices. Enjoy. Thanks to an Aging Child for suggesting this topic for a compilation.

  3. All credit goes to you, Butter, and to your vast, sprawling vault (and familiarity with everything ever recorded). These are great choices, wide-ranging and expertly balanced... though you ought to have included a waiver against wrecked vocal cords by anyone determined to sing along with all of it!

    1. Hi Aging Child
You would be surprised how many downloads I have made from TZ. Always seeming to find new and interesting things to listen to. Yes you are right about the waiver, how thoughtless of me.

PS Thanks for the idea in the first place. Have a great weekend.

      Cheers
