INSTRO-HIPSTERS

VA - Instro-Hipsters a Go-Go! Vol. 01- 05 [2008] (5 x CD's)

VA - Instro-Hipsters a Go-Go! series is a numbered Limited Edition edition containing 123 tracks of Vintage Grooviness from the '60s & '70s.  Featuring 5 individually-packaged CDs in replica card wallets, each volume is a mind-expanding collection of pure grooviness featuring some of the coolest instrumentals ever to be assembled in one place!

For those of you who enjoy groovy, mod instrumentals, where hammond and fierce percussion were King, and are by nature completists I strongly advise you purchase the box instead of the seperate volumes as Vol 1 alone is twice the asking price price of the box. Most of these 100 plus tracks will be new to everyone but the most dedicated of collectors. There are, admittedly, some tracks that have been comped on CD elsewhere but with the explosion in 60's comps it's a rarity to find one of solely unreleased material, well maybe it is, but they tend to err on the side of quality. Even acknowledging the duplication factor you will have to have a mighty extensive collection.  Throughout this collection, it's surprising the names you come across. Jimmy Nicol ("Husky"), who played drums with The Beatles, as a stand-in for Ringo, or Bobby Graham, a session drummer, who worked closely with Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), and whose single ("Zoom, Widge, and Wag") has a typically early Page guitar solo-very nice indeed. The group Trendsetters Ltd. ("I'm Coming Home"), had brothers Peter and Michael Giles, who went on to form Giles, Giles & Fripp, which turned into King Crimson. Then there's The Magic Christians, whose track "Nat's", featured Trevor Burton (The Move), and was produced by Gary Wright (Spooky Tooth). Originally titled "If You Want It", the title was changed when Badfinger released the song "Come and Get It". Plus the "Magic Christian" album Badfinger released caused even more confusion. And that's just for openers. Names occasionally crop up that you don't expect to hear throughout this compilation.  For anyone interested in great period instrumentals, from the last true era of instrumentals, this should be considered for purchase, if not immediately, then soon. It's crammed full of great music that's rarely, if ever, heard on other compilations. (Amazon)

  3. Thanks for posting this. I managed only to get hold of Volume 5 before the individual sets and the box started selling for silly money. The music itself is extremely evocative & exciting - truly a window on a different time. Thanks again!
