Crosby, Stills & Nash - CSN [1991] (4 x CD's)

CROSY STILLS & NASH

Crosby, Stills & Nash - CSN [1991] (4 x CD's)

CSN is the eleventh album by Crosby, Stills & Nash, issued on Atlantic Records in 1991, not to be confused with the album of the same name released in 1977. A box set on four compact discs, it features material spanning 1968 through 1990 from their catalogue of recordings as a group in addition to selections from Crosby & Nash, Manassas, and their individual solo albums. It peaked at No. 109 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified platinum by the RIAA. The set is "dedicated to the loving memory of Cass Elliot, without whom most of this music may not have been made." A two-disc distillation of the box was released for other markets later in the year.

The presence of the group's occasional fourth member, Neil Young, is limited to fourteen tracks and only two of his compositions for the band, "Helpless" and "Ohio". Of its 77 tracks, 25 had been unreleased previously, although many were alternate takes, alternate mixes, or concert versions of previously issued songs. Included in the unreleased tracks are a CSNY rehearsal of "Helplessly Hoping" prior to their first tour, two outtakes from the Déjà Vu sessions "Horses through a Rainstorm" and "The Lee Shore", and the December 1968 demo of "You Don't Have to Cry", the first recording they made as Crosby, Stills & Nash. Other highlights include a cover of The Beatles' "Blackbird", the full-length take of "Almost Cut My Hair", and three tracks respectively from the aborted CSNY second studio album sessions of 1973, 1974, and 1976: "See the Changes"; "Homeward through the Haze"; and "Taken at All". (Wikipedia)

From 1991, this 4-CD box set is a superb example of how to anthologize an artist/group's work. The music is the primary focus. Some very familiar songs appear in alternate mixes or slightly extended, classic singles and/or album tracks remind us of why we loved the guys and finally some quality outtakes punctuate the myth a little bit more. The song selection is exceptional and beautifully sequenced. In fact, you could be forgiven for only owning this set and nothing else by them. The package covers all phases of CSN from 1969 up to 1991, including solo efforts and duos (Crosby & Nash, Stills-Young Band). (Amazon)

The music is as majestic today as it was when first released. Most, if not all, of the hits are here. Absolutely no filler.

  1. In my early years, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones shaped my musical taste very specifically and laid the foundation for loving this genre as well as jazz and other light music.
Specifically, there was a similar development later on when I met CSN & Y, who - along with the early Beach Boys - also turned me on to the art of fine harmony singing and whose music I continue to appreciate to this day, thank you very much for that!

    2. And in some way, Woody, CS&N gave continuity to the Beatles work. Memorable songs, marvellous hamornizations and almost always a constructive and proactive message in theis lyrics (although nor always on the optmistic side). At the time of their first record, they already assimilated a much wider cultural baggage than Lennon & McCartney could ever dreamed, with the indelible marks the Beats, Dylan, LSD, the counterculture left, especially on Crosby..

    2. Embarrassingly, they're not the first bind I'm apt to reach for - but when they're on, their harmonies carry me away, and remind me that I've neglected them (and likely other folks have as well). Thanks to them, when Daughter One was very young, we used to sing in the car: "Our house Has a very, very, very large mouse: He ate two cats in the yard, He's eating the garage! Now everything is cheesy 'cause of him!" Thanks again, Butter... cheese! I mean, cheers!
