GODLEY & CREME GIZMO
Godley & Creme - Consequences [1977] (5 x CD's)
Consequences is the debut album by English pop artists Godley & Creme. It was released in 1977 as a boxed triple-LP. The album was recorded over 18 months at Strawberry Studios in Stockport and The Manor in Shipton-on-Cherwell, Oxfordshire, with Godley, Creme and engineer Martin Lawrence going to extraordinary lengths to create its special effects.
The album comes with an illustrated booklet containing a new interview with Godley and Creme and the original notes that came with the original triple album. The album has been digitally remastered and sounds fantastic on CD. When Consequences came out it was a commercial and critical disaster.
The timing was all wrong- the punk explosion destroyed prog rock and all its pomposity. The triple concept album (with an estimated budget of £500,000), and 18 months in the studio, selling at the high price of twelve pounds, was a prime target for derision, a typical review; “Consequences is a disaster: its humor is labored, its musical content is dull and the mind-numbing length of the album prove that neither Godley nor Creme knew when to quit”
Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, devised and developed the Gizmo, a small box which clamped onto the bridge of the guitar and which mechanically bowed and vibrated the instrument’s strings thus allowing a violin and cello sustained sounds. The album is a Radio play, a mixture of a Monty Python inspired comedy all written and voiced by Peter Cook. Godley and Creme add special effects, ambient soundscapes, piano sonatas, jazz, hard rock, disco and music hall. It’s a bewildering but also magnificent, near-revolutionary instrumentation, and excellent melodies. This deserves to be played with headphones in a darkened room. It’s so welcome to see a reissue of a near forgotten masterpiece. (Amazon)
