CRISTO REDENTOR
VA - Christo Redentor (A Butterboy Compilation)
Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with French engineer Albert Caquot. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida fashioned the face. Constructed between 1922 and 1931, the statue is 30 metres (98 ft) high, excluding its 8-metre (26 ft) pedestal. The arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide. The statue weighs 635 metric tons (625 long, 700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Columbus Calvin "Duke" Pearson Jr. (August 17, 1932 – August 4, 1980) was an American jazz pianist and composer. Duke Pearson wrote the song, ‘Cristo Redentor,’ (Christ the Redeemer). The song is a slow hymn, a graceful peaceful musical walk of respect and tribute to the power of humanity and art.
Pearson said he was inspired to write the song while in an airplane over Rio De Janeiro. He was on tour with the late, great Nancy Wilson. Pearson forged a friendship and working relationship during his career with the great Donald Byrd. No accident that Byrd recorded ‘Cristo Redentor,’ in 1970. Pearson arranged the very famous and legendary Byrd version. It is a certified gold record. Byrd’s trumpet captures the awe Pearson must have felt as he saw the statue over Rio so high above the people below. The statute has its own history and presence now.

This is exactly the kind of comp I love.
ReplyDeleteHi Pol,
DeleteThat is so good to hear.
Sometimes the smaller comps deliver so much more than expected.
This one has been hanging around for a long while. Glad it is here now.
Cheers.
Great idea Butterboy, good to have all these fine recordings under one roof.
ReplyDeleteHi Bob Mac,
DeleteThese swarm style comps can be very rewarding. It is also a tip of the hat to a great song or piece of music.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Interesting you used a live Charlie Musselwhite - Cristo Redentor, you know there's a far superior version on the Stand Back album, with Harvey Mandel & Barry Goldberg?
ReplyDeleteHi Bob Mac,
DeleteFair point.
I've always liked Charlie's live version. I also like the version on the Charlie Musselwhite's Southside Band album but I only wanted 20 tracks and these are the ones I went with.
Cheers
Thanks, this is a really good compilation with many Artists I like, I will listen carefully today. Bob Mac talks about Stand Back, I love this record with in addition to Musselwhite, the "young" Harvey Mandel on guitar. But I can't wait to hear the Live version which I don't know.
ReplyDeleteThanks BB for sharing
Thanks Patrick,
DeleteEnjoy these beautiful sounds.
Cheers.
That picture , beside showing the sculpture in all it's magnificence, serves to show how breathtaking Rio is. But one can't help but notice that they're surrounded by volcanoes. In fact *every* mountain and hill is a dormant volcano. Even the statue is standing on a volcano! And they're definitely recently recently created volcanoes too, judging by the lack of erosion on the one in the bay.. Maybe that's why they live there as if every day is going to be their last.. cause it really could be!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog, BTW.. Doc
Hi Doc,
DeleteThanks for your kind words.
It is a magnificent picture but never thought about the Volcanoes (dormant or dead). Now you have me thinking... that can't be a bad thing.
Cheers.
Thank you for this posting. How do you do it? Never mind! I don't want to know.
ReplyDeleteHi Fieldhippy,
DeleteYou are welcome. Enjoy!
Cheers.
You've been kicking ass since you re-opened this page, BB - it's actually hard to keep up with you!
ReplyDeleteOne reason this page is always top o' my bookmarks is things like this 'Christo Redentor' comp - an absolute genius idea that, while it might occur to a reissue label, is still too 'niche' for them to see through to completion. (Not to put down what they do in any way. Cherry Red, we love and appreciate you very much.)
Now I do have a very serious question for you, but it belongs in a different thread, so I'm off. Just wanted to give you well-earned kudos for CHRISTO.
Hi S D Joe.
DeleteI appreciated you kind comments of support.
Enjoy this compilation.
Cheers.
Most wonderful city of the world. Love you, Rio de Janeiro City!
ReplyDeleteHi Carlos Henrique Xavier Endo,
DeleteI am glad I have made you happy.
Cheers.
