VA - I See You Live on Love Street, Music from Laurel Canyon 1967-1975 (3 x CDs)

The “VA - I See You Live on Love Street, Music from Laurel Canyon 1967-1975” box set is collection that embodies the dynamic music culture of Laurel Canyon from the late 60s to the early 70s. This anthology pays homage to the abundant musical legacy that originated from this quaint haven in Los Angeles. This Box set has 72-tracks that chronicles the evolution of the Laurel Canyon music community, which rose to global prominence. The collection commences with early contributors such as The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Love, and The Doors, and transitions to the early country-rock and the singer/songwriter explosion that characterized the early 70s.

Situated a stone’s throw away from Hollywood, the Sunset Strip, and the LA record companies/studios, Laurel Canyon was the birthplace of a unique blend of folk, country, rock, and pop. This eclectic community comprised a diverse range of artists from Frank Zappa, Glen Campbell, and The Monkees to The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. The rustic allure of the canyon and its proximity to the renowned folk venue, The Troubadour, drew a multitude of singer/songwriters and also catalyzed the country-rock movement.  The Laurel Canyon community was known for its close-knit and often surprising collaborations: The Monkees teamed up with Frank Zappa, The Turtles endorsed Judee Sill and socialized with The Doors, Kim Fowley worked with both Steppenwolf and Warren Zevon, and the individual members of CSNY contributed to each other’s solo records as well as those of others.

This box set serves as a sequel to Grapefruit’s highly praised 2022 compilation ‘Heroes & Villains: The Sound of Los Angeles 1965-1968’. It maps the inception and gradual progression of the scene until a rejuvenated, relocated Fleetwood Mac led a fresh, more polished Laurel Canyon sound to skyrocket in the mid-70s.  The box set, encased in a clamshell box, includes a thoroughly annotated and illustrated 48-page booklet. It showcases many of the canyon community’s most prominent figures along with artists who didn’t find success initially but later attained cult status. The “VA - I See You Live on Love Street, Music from Laurel Canyon 1967-1975” box set is not merely an assortment of songs, it is a musical odyssey that takes listeners back to a crucial period in music history, providing a peek into the creative crucible that was Laurel Canyon. This box set is an essential acquisition for those who are interested to delving into the origins of the Laurel Canyon sound. (B)
