The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was a bipartisan United States government committee formed in 1985 with the stated goal of increasing parental control over children's access to music deemed to have violent, drug-related, or sexual themes. The committee was founded by four women known colloquially as the "Washington Wives"— a reference to their husbands' connections with government in the Washington, D.C. area. It's notable that the PMRC was not an elected organisation and did not have members, only "founders". The committee's work led to the widespread adoption of the Parental Advisory sticker. The PMRC was non-profit and thus could not lobby for government-mandated rating system legislation. They had to urge record labels to voluntarily apply stickers to their releases.
One of the actions taken by the PMRC was compiling a list of 15 songs in popular music at the time that they found the most objectionable. This list was referred to as the “Filthy 15.” (Tracks 1-15). I've added some tracks to do with censorship, including a track from Frank Zappa's "Jazz from Hell" album - the only wholly instrumental album to receive a Parental Advisory sticker - and one from John Denver, whose song "Rocky Music High" was caught up in the "porn rock" moral panic and withdrawn from radio playlists due to it's drug connotations. On September 19th 1985, the U.S. Senate held hearings on musical content, featuring testimony from the Parents' Music Resource Center (PMRC) and musicians like Frank Zappa, John Denver and Dee Snider. Excerpts from the hearings feature on the Zappa track "Porn Wars" - originally on the album "Frank Zappa meets The Mothers Of Prevention", I've included "Porn Wars Deluxe" from the compilation "Understanding America". Zappa's estate later released his entire testimony as the track "Congress Shall Make No Law" on the 2010 album of the same name.
Incidentally, besides being the 40th anniversary of the PMRC hearings, 2025 also sees the 90th anniversary of the recording, on March 5th 1935, of "Shave 'em Dry", by Lucille Bogan, which is more explicit than anything on the PMRC's "Filthy 15" list. Presumably the PMRC "founders" who were providing "information" to parents were boomers - unaware of the music that their own parents and grandparents were making and listening to, such as Lucille Bogan and many others.
There seems a difference of opinion as to whether the PMRC shut down in the mid to late 90s (Wikipedia) or "is still active, but at a diminished level after Tipper Gore stepped down in 1992, when her husband became vice president." (americansongwriter.com, December 2023). Possibly both statements are true. Of course it's possible that authoritarian politicians (or their spouses) pursuing illiberal policies may revive the issue in the future. For now this is a part of history.

Only one compilation per week from each contributor with a limit of 25 tracks per track list per submission. (Total 25 tracks only). You can submit a new track list the following week.
The Topic is your choice, Genre is your choice and any music is acceptable. (If readers don't like the topic or choices then they don't have to pick them up)
When presenting your submission, the Topic of your compilation should be Noted as well as the sound quality of the compilation. (i.e., 320Kbps MP3, Flac, etc).
Whilst most would prefer MP3's @ 320 kbps all I request is a good sound quality.
A track list must be supplied together with a LINK for your Compilation. (Please do not send the compressed file)
Artwork is not necessary but would be welcomed. All submissions need to arrive via email to:
