The Rare Fifties Boston Rockabilly series, volumes 1 through 3, is a wild, unvarnished ride through one of the most overlooked corners of American rock history. Released by Eagle Records in the mid-1990s, these compilations dig deep into the Boston-area rockabilly scene from the late 1950s, unearthing acetates, regional singles, and demo recordings that never made it past local airwaves or high school gym stages. And that’s exactly what makes them so compelling.
This isn’t slick, Nashville-polished rockabilly. It’s raw, scrappy, and full of attitude, the kind of stuff that was cut in tiny studios and pressed in batches of 500, if that. You’ll hear names like Bob Silva and the Silva-Tones, Joe Therrien Jr. and the Sully Trio, Ricky Coyne, The Satellites, and Miles Connor, many of whom never got national distribution but were tearing it up in Boston’s dance halls and teen clubs.
Each volume is packed, we’re talking 30+ tracks per disc, and the sound ranges from primitive rock ’n’ roll to frantic hillbilly stompers. There’s a ton of personality in these recordings, fuzzed-out guitars, slapback echo, and vocals that swing between croon and snarl. Even the novelty tracks and covers have a kind of regional charm that makes them feel alive.
What ties the series together is its archival spirit. These are rescues, preserving a scene that was vibrant but undocumented. For collectors, it’s a goldmine of private press rarities and label obscurities.
