The Psychedelic Schlemiels series, volumes 1 through 4, is one of the most charmingly offbeat and rewarding deep dives into the British psych underground you’ll ever stumble across. Released by Wooden Hill Records between 2007 and early 2010, these compilations gather acetates, private pressings, and unreleased demos from bands that barely made it out of their rehearsal rooms, let alone onto the charts. And that’s exactly the appeal.

These aren’t polished studio acts, they’re provincial groups, often unsigned, recording in garages, youth clubs, and tiny local studios between 1966 and 1970. The sound is raw, sometimes naïve, but full of heart. You get fuzz guitars, swirling organs, earnest vocals, and lyrics that range from whimsical to existential. It’s like eavesdropping on the British counterculture’s B-side, the part that didn’t get the spotlight but still burned bright.

Volume 1 kicks things off with 20 tracks, including unreleased cuts from West Coast Consortium, Peanut Rubble, and So On And So Forth. Later volumes dig even deeper, unearthing material from Herbal Remedy, The Phoenix, Urban, and The Object, among others. Some tracks are covers, some originals, but all feel like lost postcards from a psychedelic Britain that never quite made it to the big time.

What ties the series together is its archival intent. Wooden Hill didn’t just throw these together, they sourced tapes, cleaned up audio, and provided liner notes that give context to each band’s brief moment in the sun. For collectors, it’s a treasure trove. For listeners, it’s a reminder that the psychedelic explosion wasn’t just about the stars, it was also about the dreamers who played for the joy of it, even if no one was listening. (B)
