VA - It's Jamaica Jump Blues Time! Jamaican Sound System Classics 1941-1962 [2015] (3 x CDs)

Released in 2015 by Fantastic Voyage Records, It’s Jamaica Jump Blues Time! is a sprawling 3-CD compilation subtitled Jamaican Sound System Classics 1941-1962. It’s not a reggae or ska album, rather, it’s a deep dive into the American R&B, jump blues, and boogie woogie that laid the sonic foundation for Jamaica’s own musical revolutions.

Curated by Phil Etgart, the set features 84 tracks that were staples of early Jamaican sound systems, spun by pioneering selectors like Tom the Great Sebastian, Count Machuki, and Coxsone Dodd. These DJs often scratched off label info to keep their selections exclusive, creating a mystique around the music that this compilation seeks to demystify.

Artists include legends like: Louis Jordan, Fats Domino, T-Bone Walker, and Joe Turner with lesser-known gems from Lynn Hope, The Capris, The Spacemen, and Big Walter Horton.

The music is raw, rhythmic, and infectious, full of swagger, swing, and sly humor. Tracks like “Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie,” “She’s My Baby,” and “Jumpin’ Tonight” showcase the syncopated grooves and horn-driven energy that would later morph into ska and rocksteady.

This compilation isn’t just a historical curiosity, it’s a sonic blueprint, tracing the roots of Jamaican music back to its diasporic influences. For archivists, crate diggers, and anyone curious about the pre-ska DNA of Jamaican sound system culture, It’s Jamaica Jump Blues Time! is essential listening (B)
