SUNSHINE POP

VA - Get Easy, The Sunshine Pop Collection [2003] (2 x CD's)

The fifth volume in the perennially excellent Get Easy! series is arguably the strongest retrospective of sunshine pop ever compiled -- spanning two CDs and 40 cuts, the set combs the vaults of labels like A&M, Verve, Philips, and MGM to capture the essence of late 60's pop at its most musically ambitious. Inspired and arguably birthed by the Beach Boys, in particular their landmark Pet Sounds album, sunshine pop married radiant vocals harmonies and lush orchestral arrangements that wonderfully evoked a beatitude and poignancy often forgotten amidst the political and cultural turbulence of its era. There were some major hits of note from acts like the Association, the Turtles, and the Cowsills, but by and large sunshine pop remains largely a cult fascination, and this wonderful collection is the perfect place to hop aboard for both its hits and its rarities -- virtually every song's a winner, but standouts include the Hobbits' "Sunny Day Girl," Spanky & Our Gang's "I'd Like to Get to Know You," the Twinn Connexion's "Oh What a Lovely Day," Van Dyke Parks' "Number Nine," and the The Fun and Games' "Topanga Canyon Road." (AllMusic Review by Jason Ankeny)

"Always You" by The Sundowners is one of songwriter Roger Nichols' very finest, with words by Pet Sounds lyricist Tony Asher. Good luck finding it anywhere... but you need it if you're seriously into the sunshine pop genre. From then on it's a generous helping of (generally) excellent but (mostly) very obscure cuts from the late 60's.

  5. Great collection! Some really unexpected performances. But why do the folks on the cover look like they are waiting for something terrible to happen?

    1. I agree Bill.
I've never fealt the cover does justice to the overall sound. Its a little to arty-farty.
But, its the music that counts.

      Cheers.

  7. Great, just Great! You knew this would perk my attention.. didn't you BB?

I think this may have been a German comp. I could say something about most of these but will remark on only a few. The bass-driven "Mr. Dieingly Sad" by The Critters is such an amazing song and anomaly, unlike and apart from anything else they did I know of, there must be an interesting story there. The "98.6/Lazy Day" mashup by Leslie Gore is a fascinating and unique piece of work.. very cool! "Like To Get To Know You" by Spanky & Our Gang is my favorite tune by them but I'm not sure they originally intended it to be a single as the song as we know it was (frustratingly, at the time) split into two sections on the album, the main too brief part, and a coda. The hit version here was only available as a single and later on the Spanky's Greatest Hit(s) album (a terrific album by the way). Larry Carlton is an infamous session guitarist and it's super to hear him give treatment to The Buckingham's "Don't You Care". If you're unfamiliar with this gentleman's contributions to our music just check his Wikipedia page.. unbelievable!

Finally, were you aware Pete Jolly (his stage name) had a Trio of his own and besides playing on many TV music and movie soundtracks was Herb Alpert's go-to pianist. Pete's leanings were more toward jazz then pop though. Herb gave him a couple albums on A&M. Take a moment to listen to what is my favorite Pete Jolly tune, an interpretation of "Windows Of The World". Notice what he does with it, at the beginning the melody part is fairly straight-forward but as the song progresses he uses more of his unique, off-beat, piano staccato jazz flourishes while never straying too far from the real melody.. very nice.

I agree this cover pic does not fit the album's mood but as for the music.. whoever picked the tunes was a master compiler, much like yourself BB! They really knew what they were doing because many of the selections are not mainstream or found on other compilations, but all are great-sounding representations of this genre. Glad it was more than 1 CD but wish it were more than 2.

    Thanks a bunch BB.

    1. Hi mrRadio.
I was not surprised that you would comment about this great compilation. As I posted it I though this may bring you out of the woods. Hope you are well.

I have a few more compilations in this genre to post, so lets see how they fair up.

I have a few Pete Jolly albums. I don't remember the track you mention, so I will go digging through the vault and check it out again. Thanks for the suggestion. I also have some materials by Larry Carlton. I could probably come up with a compilation of Larry Carlton collaborations.

      Stay safe

      Cheers.

    2. You don't have to dig thru your Pete Jolly BB cause I put the link for it in my comment if you missed. Another thought I'll make just because now is the time.. if I could I would have replaced the Orpheus track here with "Can't Find The Time To Tell You". Also, another group called Rose Colored Glass (a one hit wonder band) covered the same song in 1971 which I like better and their female member adds good voice. Check those out on YouTube if you don't know them. This comp may be part of a series but I'm thinking they are not all about Sunshine Pop. Honestly, for me tho.. ANY compilation that thinks to include Peppermint Rainbow's "Will You Be Staying After Sunday" is worth a look and listen. That's my criteria. Take care there.

    3. I am going to pull them out anyway as I want to reevaluate.
Its been a long time since I listened to them. Thanks for the link as well.
I will seek out some you tube clips (not my normal practice) as you suggest.

      Cheers.

    4. I've got few of the 45s on this, the Sundowners tune is the LP version, the 45 doesn't have the horn and string intro

The Drifter is the rarest and most sort after 45 for the B side, Berlin

Rose Colored Glass - Mystic Touch and Larry Carlton - Moon People are worth a listen

      Thx for the tunes.
