ORIGINATORS, INNOVATORS & ODDBALLS IN ROCK

VA - Originators, Innovators and Oddballs (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

No one person started rock and roll. It was a black and white alloy of Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, Ike Turner, Hank Williams, Joe Turner, Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and every one before them.  Little Richard once said, "The blues had an illegitimate baby and we named it rock 'n' roll." He recognised the facts, that all music evolved, but that didn’t stop him from leading the pack with often innovative and original material that went on to be popularised by many. His was a bigger than life figure. Black and white musical traditions cross-educated each other, and then disc jockey Alan Freed popularized the phrase "rock and roll," which was black slang for having sex.  Rock and Roll was here to stay.

While Rock itself is a hybrid genre derived from other "root" genres, so the most "original" of the rock stars were the ones who came up with unusual combinations of influences that set them apart from other artists.  Many artists were a pastiche of what came before them, still they infused rock with a flair that was almost entirely unknown at the time. Little Richard, Screaming Jaw Hawkins and chuck Berry were true originals for me (all great performers and a big key to where we are today). There are many imitators and yes, they did amazing work, but only a few really move us.

It may be easy to dismiss some of the artists that appear in this compilation, but sit back and look at the impact they have had on other musicians as well as the listener. These are the standout artists that inspired other musicians to create, innovate and add a flavour through an individual and original persona. Their individuality not only changed the way music is played today but they changed fashion and culture. They each had individual characteristics that distinctively distinguished them from others at the time. Others are here because they also had an oddball persona together with their skilled musicianship. You decide who the oddballs are as you contemplate there impact.

Icons like Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, James Brown, The Rolling Stone and The Beatles were all changed by rock and roll and in turn they changed rock and roll forever. These artists have not been included in this set as they stand alone.

This is volume 1 so expect more in the future. I am sure there could be many more compilations that address the originators, innovators and oddballs in rock and roll.

The first two track lists offer up mostly individual artists. The third track list concentrates on bands. Everyone will have their own list and opinions and that is good but it cannot be denied that these artists all stridently contributed to what we call Rock today. Enjoy!

    1. Hi g8rrick.
Pretty much every one of these artists could be seen as an oddball from time to time, Its part of their greatness. Of course being innovative and original helps.

      Cheers.

  9. Rock was indeed founded and fed into flame in its infancy by the Originators, Innovators, and Oddballs. Thank you, Butter, for spotlighting this fundamental truth... and for showcasing as well that originators, innovators, and oddballs are still at it. That's reassuring to know, and a fine treat to the ears and heart. Cheers, sir!

    1. Hi Aging child,
I tried to sum up why this compilation should exist in the opening blurb. There are many artist that are shunned for being different but it is these artists that make us lift our heads and eyes to make a special connection. Sometime we leave but sometimes we find something so special we join them for the ride.
I love rock 'n' roll. So put another dime in the jukebox, baby.
I may create another set that is only about innovators and cover a broader pallet of sounds. Also there is definitely room for a comp for Oddballs (With the highest respect)
(PS I have made of 250 compilations now)

      Cheers.

  10. ("You were the one that they said was so _weird_": George Harrison on John Lennon)

250 compilations! If you haven't put an addition on your home to house all the music, you'll need to add one just for the servers to hold all the MP3s; wow! And the achievement isn't just the 250-and-counting, it's all the appreciative folks who've discovered new music, and remet old and near-forgotten friends in music through you. Cheers!
