Pink Floyd - Pompeii (2018 The Quadraphonic & Original Stereo Mixes Collection) [1971] (4 x CD's)

SOURCE NOTES: The audio was taken from a 35 mm Cinemascope 4-track magnetic striped print of live at Pompeii featuring the quadraphonic mix (l, r, ls, rs.4 corners"). This format used the same 4-channel magnetic audio tracks but not in the intended standard l, c, rs configuration. This 4 corners quad format was briefly used in the early to mid 1970'sfor more music focused films. The only theaters equipped for the non-standard audio format were in New York & Los Angeles

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: in 1974, associate producer Phil Borack (whose company April fools films handled distribution of the film in the United States) and director Adrian Maben visited Los Angeles for the purpose of finding someone to produce a quadraphonic mix of the film's original multi-tracks. Dan Wallin, who received an Oscar nomination 4 years earlier for his work on Woodstock was appointed for this task. The mix was done in discrete quad, the multi-tracks were mixed to mag at A&M record studios, and then the mags were taken over to Todd-AO where the final mix was done. The quad mix was featured in selected screenings of the film but has never seen the light of day since then. Pink Floyd was never involved with the quad mix and it's possible that they're completely unaware of its existence.

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a 1972 concert documentary film directed by Adrian Maben and featuring the English rock group Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. Although the band perform a typical live set from the era, there is no audience beyond the basic film crew. The main footage in and around the amphitheater was filmed over four days (4th, 5th, 6th and 7th) in October 1971, using the band's regular touring equipment, including a mobile 8-track recorder from Paris (before being bumped up to 16-track in post-production). Additional footage filmed in a Paris television studio the following December was added for the original 1972 release. The film was then re-released in 1974 with additional studio material of the band working on The Dark Side of the Moon, and interviews at Abbey Road Studios. The film has subsequently been released on video numerous times, and in 2002, a Director's cut DVD appeared which combined the original footage from 1971 with more contemporary shots of space and the area around Pompeii, assembled by Maben. A number of bands have taken inspiration from the film in creating their own videos, or filming concerts without an audience. (Wikipedia)

This boxset of Quadrophonic & original stereo mixes collection was release by Archive Records in 2018 in Deluxe Edition, Limited Edition, Unofficial  and limited to 300 copies. 1. Hi Carlos Henrique Xavier Endo.
Sorry to hear you have problems with KrakenFiles. They had a major fire a little while back and I lost many files.
I just tested these ones and they appear to be working fine.
I hope you experience s better next time.

      Cheers.

    2. Krakenfiles is fantastic here in Oz (in fact very fast download as you would be aware of BB). I have read on other music blogs there are issues, the American and European continents primarily ...

Yes, they did have a fire (or some storage issue) a few weeks back however files uploaded since aren't affected.

    3. Hi, Butterboy, nice of you to reply. In fact, I still have problems with the first link, KrakenFiles says that it's out and/or nor supported. And I agree, KrakenFiles is a very good issue, but has some difficulties once or twice.

    4. Hi Carlos,
I just tested the first link again and I see no issue. I tried it in several browsers and still no issue for me. Have you tried another browser or VPN. Is it only a problem on these Pink Floyd Files?

      Cheers

  3. BB, I would like to give back to the community so would it be possible to add to your blog a side car 'thingee' box to post uploads?

For example, I have almost everything İlhan Erşahin has recorded (about six months to gather this - 2.09 Gigs in total ... not easy to find!) and I would like to give back. Oh, That's just one example ... so, so, much more.

I'm sure others here equally have treasures to offer.

Anyway, I've been meaning to mention this for a while now ... done and dusted! :-)

    1. Hi Freddie,
I have no plans to set a Chat box at this stage. You know you are welcome to share relevant material in the comments section if you want. I just ask that what you drop is relevant to the topic.
This has been done by others here in the past.

This site link is one that will enjoy some new posters.

Just post it in the section titled …and now for something completely different!

      Cheers

  4. This looks to be the definitive audio recording of a pivotal concert event (minus audience!) by a powerfully seminal group - thank you for making this available, Butter!

    1. Hi Aging Child,
I had forgotten about this one until a few days before I posted it. I found it stacked with mu Quadraphonic Dark Side of the Moon album. It is a great listen.

      Cheers.
