HURDY GURDY

VA - Hurdy Gurdy Songs, Words And Music By Donovan 1965 - 1971 [2021]

This Ace Records' popular Songwriters series is a kaleidoscopic trip into the craft of one of the most covered and influential artists of the 60's. The body of work he wrote and recorded during the golden period we celebrate on Hurdy Gurdy Songs has become one of the most critically and commercially successful of the era, and continues to attract new listeners and demand reappraisal; proof that Donovan, the psychedelic minstrel whose records colored the late 60's pop landscape, was one of a kind. A prolific writer, he gifted a number of songs to other artists: 'You Just Gotta Know My Mind' and 'Snakeskin' appear on our collection and serve to illustrate the widespread appeal of his material to female interpreters as diverse as Eartha Kitt, Peggy Lipton and Bridget St John. Donovan's whirlwind journey through the second half of the 60's left him beaten and bruised but the music he created, in which the eclectic influences of pop, spirituality, poetry, magic and the spirit of the age found their way into these unique and enduring songs, continues to thrill and beguile today. A wonderful even revelatory set of Donovan covers that shines a light on truly how great and varied a songwriter and composer he is, with a dazzling array of artists mostly from the late sixties…

    1. I'm with you all the way Bob Mac.
I have periods where I don't here Donovan's work and when I hear it again i feel transformed. I fell in love with his Barabajagal album long ago and I think the Cosmic Wheels album is great too.

      Enjoy this set of covers.

      Cheers.

  5. What, no Mountain Jam by the Allman Brothers? I guess it would have been a double CD then. Thanks for this!

    1. Hi Vaughan,
      Good one!
I have Donovan's "There Is a Mountain" in later volumes, very catchy.
I didn't get into The Allman Brothers until later on. I don't know why but they re a great band. I like their Fillmore East rendition.

      Cheers.
