Frank Zappa - The Mothers 1971 (Super Deluxe) (8 x CD's)

FRANK ZAPPA

Frank Zappa - The Mothers 1971 (Super Deluxe) (8 x CD's)

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Mothers of Invention's 1971 lineup, the complete Fillmore tapes are showcased here with every note played over 4 shows, including the John Lennon & Yoko Ono encore. Also included, is the full concert from the Rainbow Theatre in London, where FZ was infamously pushed off the stage, newly mixed by Eddie Kramer. This Super Deluxe 8 CD box set features a bonus hybrid 1971 concert from Harrisburg and Scranton, PA, with extensive liner notes and packaging.

Fillmore East 71 was always one of my least played Zappa CDs. This package changes that! I'm impressed with how tight this band is. Aynsley Dunbar gets a special mention as his drumming is spot on. The Rainbow show is the real jewel here. To hear the complete King Kong from this show is something I have wished for since getting YCDTOSA vol. 3 many years ago. It's now my favorite version of this classic tune. Just an amazing package that is fun and really puts you in the seats at the Fillmore in 1971! Thank you to the ZFT who keep hitting home run after home run with the archival releases. Everything we can hear of the vault contents is a gift and testament that during Frank's lifetime, we were only seeing the tip of the iceberg. He recorded so much brilliant stuff...only FZ heard every note but he was smart enough to roll tape to give us a window into his genius. (Amazon)

  1. I do listen to Fillmore 71, but this is even better! I like the added Lennon/Ono (although Scumbag is still the best). a lot of the posthumous stuff is just so brilliant. The Family Trust (and Joe) are doing a great job releasing these recordings. BTW, if you get the chance to hear Zappa Plays Zappa go. Dweezil and the gang are amazing live. Seen them several times now and it is worth it!!

    1. Hi Pol.
I have got and listened to Zappa Plays Zappa. The opening track is amazing as are the others.
No Dweezil on my agenda though but I will keep and ear and eye out.
      Cheers.

  3. Many thanks. It's a sad Frank Zappa fan who can't appreciate "Filmore East", though it does separate the TRUE FANS from the rest.

  4. I was 15 when Fillmore East came out. It was like when Dark Side of the Moon came out. All these people that had never heard of either band were suddenly huge fans and played the albums to death. I'm no prude but Fillmore East just pushes filth over virtuosity. It was a Zappa album I never purchased, though I had everything else, but only downloaded one recently. I never listen to it, and I seriously think that 'It's a sad Zappa fan" ... I think mostly dorks that liked the purile infantile humor. True fans know it's a throw away. But to the point here BB, what an incredible gift. Thanks a mill.

    1. Hi FiveGunsWest,
I know, what an impact those albums had. FZ was an original individual who often opened the envelope. I agree it is not always great news to read and we don't always appreciate being confronted. However, the music is always wonderful. Enjoy the set again and skip past the bits that are not in favour. This is a gift of an box set.
      Cheers.

  5. Thanks so much for this I also have Fillmore 71 but it's great to hear all the instrumentals!

  6. I consider myself a 'true fan' of Zappa, yet I've always felt the Flo & Eddie years were a low point in his storied career, particularly when held up against the many far superior recordings (and bands that he led) both pre and post 'Fillmore '71' and 'Just Another Band From L.A.' Admittedly, the presence of Ansley Dunbar and Ian Underwood served to keep the proceedings from dissolving into the unlistenable, all of which is evident by the instrumental prowess that churns beneath the insipid adolescent humor and rises to the surface in the instrumentals. But although you didn't exactly say it, you're right, Butterboy. With digital files, one can simply skip over the witless bits and jump directly to the meatier segments. Thanks for generous share!

    1. Thank you for your fine commet, Miles.
This recording will always be alienating for some but as you say there are absolutely moments of brilliance in the music that should be savoured.

  8. I was a snot nose kid when this came out. It was a revelation. In a room lit only by blacklight we made up our own dances to The Mud Shark. Good times!
