Genesis - Underrated (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

Genesis were an English rock band formed by five Charterhouse pupils including Banks, Rutherford, Gabriel, and Anthony Phillips, Genesis was named by former pupil Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record several unsuccessful singles and their debut album From Genesis to Revelation in 1968. After splitting with King, the group began to tour professionally, signed with Charisma Records and recorded Trespass (1970) in the progressive rock style. Following the departure of Phillips, Genesis recruited Collins and Hackett and recorded Nursery Cryme (1971). Their live shows also began to be centered on Gabriel's theatrical costumes and performances. They were first successful in mainland Europe, before entering the UK charts with Foxtrot (1972). In 1973, they released Selling England by the Pound (1973), which featured their first UK top 30 single "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)". The concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway followed in 1974 and was promoted with a transatlantic tour featuring an elaborate stage show. Following the Lamb tour, Gabriel left Genesis in August 1975 to begin a solo career. After an unsuccessful search for a replacement, Collins took over as lead singer, while Genesis gained popularity in the UK and the US. They have sold 21.5 million copies of their albums in the United States, with worldwide sales of between 100 million and 150 million. (Wikipedia)

Genesis has two distinct sounds for me, and I enjoy both although I prefer the Peter Gabriel era material. It really doesn't matter which side of the Genesis fence you sit on though because Genesis has made incredible music in every one of their musical eras. Mainly because the band were such great songwriters. With the many songs they recorded over that 28-year period they have left a great musical legacy. From their first song, "Where the Sour Turns to Sweet" in 1969 to their last song "One Man's Fool" in 1997. From the long-form insanity of "Supper's Ready" to the savvy yacht-pop of "Hold on My Heart", the band has covered so much sonic territory. In that wonderful kingdom they have many songs which often go unnoticed or are simply underrated.

This compilation looks at the underrated songs of Genesis. They are not presented in any specific order. They are a reflection of my love for their music and simply songs which I consider underrated. Enjoy!

  2. I saw Genesis live, in a suburb of New Orleans, when they toured in support of The Lamb album. There may have been 200 people at the show. Still, they performed the double album in its entirety, followed by Suppers Ready and The Musical Box. Amazing show. Thanks for these, BB!

    1. Hi lemonflag.
Apparently so. I have read a number of articles which use the term.
Yacht-pop music is a sub-genre of soft rock that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is also known as the West Coast Sound or adult-oriented rock. Yacht-pop music features elements of smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, funk, rock, and disco. It is characterized by its smooth and mellow sound, which is perfect for relaxing on a yacht or a boat. (from Web). If you look for a definition of Yacht Rock, it is basically the same.
      Cheers
