VA - The Other Greatest Songwriters CD1 - CD4 (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CD's)

This set continues from the 100 greatest Songwriter (previously posted).
In 2015 Rolling Stone magazine published their 100 best songwriters of all time and included many of the modern greats such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Kanye West and Joni Mitchell. There were some interesting less popular choices (thank goodness John Prine made it, although at an absurdly low position 94, and the late Merle Haggard) and who could argue with Van Morrison, Carole King or Randy Newman? But there were some major omissions. So here is an alternate list of the best 100 songwriters not included in the Rolling Stone 100.

When you see this list, you will shake your head saying "why wasn't that artist included the RS list"
Here are 100 OTHER Greatest Songwriters.

  1. I hate "lists" because it usually shows up the bias of those that compile them. Sometimes I think there done just to be controversial.

  2. I beg your pardon, Dr Robert, but your comment is neither fair nor clever. It is rude and impolite. BB can be proud of this "list", I myself will love to listen to this selection, and also look forward to many discoveries in it... Best (to BB only), TC

    1. Actually I was having a dig at Rolling Stone magazine who use these lists to generate controversy and therefore publicity - the best example being their 500 greatest albums list. To say that one album is best there ever was is ridiculous. The comment was in no way against this site which I think is one of the most stimulating and challenging on the web.

    2. Now I understand the context of your statement. Case closed. Best, TC

    3. Glad that's sorted. Thanks for working it out.
My only hope is you both enjoy the two sets because at the end of the day it's the music that matters.
      Cheers.

  3. Lists do tend to tell us more about the compiler than the artists. But the fun is seeing where we overlap or disagree. Thanks for making time to do this. Keep on trucking BB.

    1. Hi lemonflag.
There is no list that everyone would agree on but lists, for me, hold some truth as well. We can always think of material we prefer by a given singer/songwriter. But sometimes we rethink our position after relistening to a track on a compilation like this.
      Cheers

    1. Hi Brian F.
I must have gotten too excited or just tired.
Any Suggestion for a new #100?
      Cheers.

  5. May I suggest Al Stewart or Bruce Cockburn?

  6. Warren Zevon also in both. Re. 'replacements' - Al Stewart/Bruce Cockburn OK but how about evening up the hemispherical spread - Paul Kelly and Neil Murray from Oz? Love your work BB - forever thankful.

    1. Hi Magpie,
      Thanks.
Paul Kelly should be in there for sure, 100%. Neil Murray is great too. What about Neil Finn?
      Cheers.

    1. Hi StoneRose.
Paddy is terrific. Maybe we should have a reader's poll that does not include the singer/songwriters from the first two sets. mmmm... It would be interesting.
      Cheers.

  8. Have there already been mentions of those magnificent OZies Robert Forster & Grant McLennan (with the Go-Betweens, but also including their solo works) and/or the great Saints man Chris Bailey (especially "All Fools Day")? I think they would also be highly qualified for a future edition. Best, TC

    1. I don't believe so, TC.
The singer/songwriters we love needs to be a Readers Poll set.
      Cheers.
