VA - Ska Authentic Vol. 01 [1964] + Vol. 02 [1967] (2 x CDs)

The original Ska Authentic LP was released in 1964 and after the first pressing sold out it was not reissued, becoming one of the rarest albums in the catalog. In 1967, an English version of the album was released, but bore little resemblance to the original 1964 Jamaican release, sharing only two songs. The English version is distinguished by the orange box around Authentic, a redesigned back cover, and the red and white hanging mic label. This album was basically a Skatalites affair and became the version that was reissued for over thirty years. In the mid-1990s, a new version of the album was released, sharing tracks from both earlier issues as well as adding four new tracks. To further complicate matters, in 2000 a Ska Authentic Vol. 2 was released that included two songs from the very first album. This new Studio One release marks the first time in fifty-three years that the original landmark album has become available again. Featuring top instrumentals like Freedom Sounds and vocals from the Gaylads, Lee Perry, the Maytals, and Jackie Opel, this release showcases the power of the Studio One ska recordings. It also gives a glimpse into the selections that drove the ska fans wild and fueled the dances.

Ska Authentic, Vol. 1 Ska Authentic Presenting The Original Ska-Talites From Jamaica. The Skatalites cut the bulk of their sides for top Jamaican producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in and around 1964. This Studio One album rounds up 16 fine examples of the ska riches the band and Dodd came up with, including such now-classic ska cuts as "Four Corners" and "Exodus." This might not be the ideal collection (the mostly Dodd-produced two-disc Foundation Ska gets top prize), but Ska Authentic still delivers with 16 solid tracks and plenty of excellent solos by band stars Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, and Johnny "Dizzy" Moore. This collection is best suited for seasoned fans, but newcomers certainly won't be disappointed after giving it a spin. (AMG review Stephen Cook)

VA - Ska Authentic Vol. 2 is a compilation album of ska music by the Jamaican band The Skatalites, released in 1970 by Studio One. The album features 16 tracks recorded between 1964 and 1967, some of which are mislabeled or misspelled on the CD and the tray card. The album is a reissue of the vinyl release of Ska Authentic Volume 2 from 1967, with two additional tracks that do not appear on the original. The album showcases the Skatalites’ instrumental skills and their fusion of jazz, R&B, and Caribbean rhythms. Some of the tracks feature vocals by Lee Perry, Delroy Wilson, The Gaylads, and The Maytals.  (AMG review Stephen Cook)
