We often pay attention to the opening and closing tracks, but what about the ones in between? Could they be hidden gems waiting to be discovered?   That’s the idea behind this series of compilations, to explore the fifth tracks of various albums and genres and see what surprises they have in store. You might find some familiar tunes, some forgotten classics, or some new favorites. 

This series is based on completion albums I own, as well as tracks suggested by the amazing My compilations team. I hope to cover all kinds of music in this series and introduce you to some songs you might have missed or overlooked.

This is the SECOND offering in the series. This volume is dedicated to Progressive Rock which is characterized by its complex and elaborate musical arrangements, ambitious compositions, concept-driven lyrics, and musical virtuosity. Progressive rock is based on fusions of styles, approaches and genres, involving a continuous move between formalism and eclecticism. Due to its historical reception, the scope of progressive rock is sometimes limited to a stereotype of long solos, long albums, fantasy lyrics, grandiose stage sets and costumes, and an obsessive dedication to technical skill. While the genre is often cited for its merging of high culture and low culture, few artists incorporated literal classical themes in their work to any great degree.

While the peak years for Prog Rock were 1971-1976, it has never died out. Progressive rock as a genre continues into the 2020s often termed Neo-Prog.
