K's ROCK STEADY SPECIAL.

VA - Rock-Steady Explosion: 555 Original Rocksteady Firecrackers (Super Deluxe Edition) [2024] (20xCDs)

Rocksteady is a music genre that originated in Jamaica around 1966. A successor of ska and a precursor to reggae, rocksteady was the dominant style of music in Jamaica for nearly two years, performed by many of the artists who helped establish reggae, including harmony groups such as the Techniques, the Paragons, the Heptones and the Gaylads; soulful singers such as Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, Bob Andy, Ken Boothe and Phyllis Dillon; musicians such as Jackie Mittoo, Lynn Taitt and Tommy McCook. The term rocksteady comes from a popular (slower) dance style mentioned in the Alton Ellis song "Rocksteady", that matched the new sound. Some rocksteady songs became hits outside Jamaica, as with ska, helping to secure the international base reggae music has today.

As a popular musical style, rocksteady was short-lived; its heyday only lasted about two years, from around summer 1966 until spring 1968 but timeless hits like "Stir It Up" and "Bend Down Low" by the original Wailers that had vocals by Bob Marley and rhythms by the Soul Brothers were created during this era, among many others, launching careers of the biggest reggae singers ever.

Also, in the middle to later part of the decade, as ska began to fade in popularity and the optimism that accompanied Independence in 1962 dwindled, young people from the Jamaican countryside were flooding into the urban ghettos of Kingston - in neighborhoods such as Riverton City, Greenwich Town and Trenchtown. Many of them became delinquents who exuded a certain coolness and style. These unruly youths became known as rude boys.

Alton Ellis is sometimes said to be the father of rocksteady for his hit "Rocksteady",but other candidates for the first rocksteady single include "Take It Easy" by Hopeton Lewis, "Tougher Than Tough" by Derrick Morgan and "Hold Them" by Roy Shirley. An account of the Studio One band The Soul Vendors says the genre changed from ska to rock steady when the Skatalites band broke up in 1965 having been severely underpaid by producer Coxsone Dodd, and the new rhythm section known as The Soul Brothers (aka Soul Vendors, aka Sound Dimension) entered Studio One which drummer Joe Isaacs, bass player Brian Atkinson, and drummer Sly Dunbar all say the Rock Steady genre origins truth in the film documentary STUDIO DRUMMIE ONE AND THE HISTORY OF ROCK STEADY MUSIC which premiered at Jamaica Reggae Film Festival 2012 and Billboard called "just as significant as the Marley documentary in the chronicling of the ongoing, multifaceted narrative that is Jamaican popular music". According to Joe Isaacs, Brian Atkinson and Sly Dunbar, rock steady music started at Studio One in 1966 because when Joe Isaacs at age 15 replaced Skatalites drummer Lloyd Knibbs, Isaacs could not play drums fast enough to keep up with the pace of ska. So in early 1966, music director Jackie Mittoo (The Mozart of Jamaica), slowed down the ska compositions he had composed for The Skatalites from 1963 to 1965 to accommodate his friend Isaacs into the new Studio One band at which point Coxsone Dodd said it was now 'Rock Steady'.

In a Jamaican radio interview, pianist Gladstone Anderson said that bandleader Lynn Taitt made a suggestion to slow the music down whilst recording "Take It Easy". Taitt backed this up in a 2002 interview, stating: "I told 'Gladdy to slow the tempo and that's how Take It Easy and rocksteady came about. Rocksteady is really slow ska."

The record producer Duke Reid released Alton Ellis' "Girl, I've Got a Date" on his Treasure Isle label, as well as recordings by the Techniques, the Silvertones, the Jamaicans and the Paragons. Reid's work with these groups helped establish the vocal sound of rocksteady. Some would consider the rocksteady years to be Treasure Isle's best. Rocksteady's dominance meant that all record labels of the time released music in the genre; Studio One, Bunny Lee and Prince Buster were predominant, with Reid.

Notable solo artists include Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe and Phyllis Dillon (known as the "Queen of Rocksteady"). Other musicians who were crucial in creating rocksteady included keyboard player Jackie Mittoo, drummers Joe Isaacs and Winston Grennan, bassist Jackie Jackson and saxophonist Tommy McCook. When ska band the Skatalites disbanded (64/65-accounts vary) McCook went to work at the Treasure Isle label and Jackie Mittoo went to the Studio One label - these two artists/arrangers became instrumental in the way these two labels became dominant and helped to form the sound of Rocksteady.

Despite its short lifespan, rocksteady's influence is great. Many reggae artists began in rocksteady (and/or ska) - most commonly reggae singers grew out of rocksteady groups, e.g., Junior Byles came from the Versatiles, John Holt was in the Paragons, both Pat Kelly and Slim Smith sang with the Techniques (Pat Kelly sings lead on "You Don't Care") and Ronnie Davis was in the Tennors while Winston Jarrett was in the Righteous Flames. The Wailing Wailers were similarly a vocal harmony trio (modelled on the Impressions) who came from ska, through rocksteady and became a reggae band with just the one main vocalist.

Derrick Harriott noted, "Ask any Jamaican musician and they'll tell you the rocksteady days were the best days of Jamaican music."

Forming the bridge between ska and reggae, rock steady is arguably the most influential of Jamaican music’s many sub-genres. Although it lasted only a couple of years, rock steady yielded several of the island’s most immortal rhythm tracks. It is also probably the most contested of reggae formats, the innovations behind its irresistible beat claimed by a range of practitioners.

Rock steady’s innovative qualities are highly distinctive. First, it replaced the big band ska format with stripped-down studio ensembles that put the emphasis on the bass and drum, forever changing the focus of Jamaican music. Widespread use of electric bass came about during rock steady too, its upfront placement thanks partly to the advent of multi-track technology. Compare the frantic pumping of Lloyd Brevett of The Skatalites, whose acoustic bass was often relegated to the background, with the smooth lines of Jackie Jackson in The Supersonics, and you can hear how rock steady made bass the carrier of the melody line – a constant of the subsequent reggae to follow.

Themes addressing social issues came to the fore in rock steady as well, due in part to the “rude boy” phenomenon then plaguing Jamaica, with disenfranchised street gang members that engaged in acts of wanton violence becoming the focus of many rock steady tunes. And although vocal harmony groups had been an important part of ska, they began to truly dominate in rock steady.

Perhaps most important of all, rock steady had an idiosyncratic beat. The sound that gradually replaced ska was a slower, less cluttered style whose rhythm stressed the third beat of every measure. With a prominent electric bass now playing a readily defined strolling pattern, a new dance style came up that featured shaking shoulders, snapping fingers and a rocking body line, grafted onto the dancers’ stationary grid.

One of the biggest myths of rock steady is that its slow pace resulted from the “hot summer” of 1966. But as is noted in Caribbean Currents, Jamaica’s tropical climate does not allow for distinctions of summer and winter. Indeed, the island merely experiences rainy and dry seasons, meaning that the average daily temperature is generally only a few degrees cooler from December to February than during July and August.

As with ska, it is difficult to pinpoint the first bonafide rock steady recording. The rock steady dance craze seems to have arrived in earnest in late 1966, and it ruled Jamaica throughout 1967, although the dance may have been prevalent considerably earlier. As for the music, ska centred on rhythmic bursts provided by rhythm guitar or piano, as heard on Roy and Millie’s “We’ll Meet,” or the metric blowing of brass instruments (particularly trombone), as in the Skatalites’ “Confuscius”; in contrast, rock steady gained its demarcation from its unique drum beat, known as the “one-drop.”

As the frantic, frenetic pace of ska finally let up in 1966 the cool, cool sound of rock steady came to the fore. This languid, soulful music was the complete musical antithesis of its more famous antecedent and the gentle guitar of Lynn Taitt would forever define the sound of rock steady.

Trinidadian Nerlynn 'Lynn' Taitt had been given a contract by Byron Lee to travel to Jamaica to play at the Independence celebrations in 1962 but fell in love with Jamaica and decided to stay, joining The Sheiks and then The Cavaliers before forming Lynn Taitt and the Comets. Lynn also recorded as a guest guitarist with The Skatalites before Lynn Taitt and the Jets came together in 1966.

The rock steady beat was slower, more measured and the emphasis was placed on the bass. It no longer gave equal emphasis to every beat but, instead, played a repeated pattern that syncopated the rhythm. The rhythmic focus shifted to the core of the music to the bass and the drums where it has remained ever since.

"For that tempo the tempo is very slow with the bass and guitar line playing the same thing. You used to use two guitars. Hux Brown and myself or another guitarist and myself. And it was very slow but with a definite bass line going straight through the song..." Lynn Taitt

Lynn Taitt and the Jets were soon in such great demand that they would often play up to five sessions a day for as many different producers but they were not the only rock steady band. When the Skatalites had broken up in 1965 Jackie Mittoo formed Studio One's house band The Soul Brothers (who soon became The Soul Vendors) and Tommy McCook decided to work with Duke Reid at Treasure Isle studio with The Supersonics.

Bobby Aitken's Carib Beats eschewed subtlety for drive but together these musicians were responsible for establishing the rules of rock steady music. Their gentle approach allowed vocalists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe and Desmond Dekker and harmony groups including The Techniques, The Melodians, The Uniques and The Paragons and many, many more to demonstrate their prowess.

Rock steady only lasted for a brief period, from 1966 to 1968, but its significance to the subsequent development of Jamaican music is incalculable and it would go on to shape each successive musical movement over the next four decades. Deejays, dub, digital and dance hall all stepped to the tune and pace of rhythms whose origins were grounded in the rock steady beat and it is impossible to ever overstate its importance... or its beauty.

So, after exhaustive and extensive online research, plus my own recollections and memories, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the 555 best and most important tracks from the original Rocksteady era of the mid-late 1960s.

This fully packed 20CD set contains many hard to find tracks. Only the original studio mixes are included, with many tracks featured in their original 45 7" mono single form. A few tracks have been sourced and ripped from the original vinyl records as they are extremely rare and have never been officially released on CD. No later remixes, re-recordings, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here!

Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters (where available), with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.
