VA - RCD Classic Rock Collection Vol. 01 - 16 [1992-1993] (16 x CD's)

RCD Magazine was a monthly UK magazine that combined the compact disc and rock music. It was published by Northern & Shell, which also produced sister magazines Soul Compact Disc and Heavy Metal Compact Disc. RCD Magazine ran for 16 issues from July 1992 to October 1993. Each issue came with a free CD that featured classic rock songs from various artists and genres. Some of the themes of the CDs were psychedelia, electric blues, hippy chic, punk plus, live and blues. RCD Magazine also featured interviews, reviews, news and profiles of rock musicians and bands.

RCD Magazine was one of the first magazines to use the CD format as a way of promoting rock music to a wider audience. It was aimed at both fans and collectors of rock music, as well as newcomers who wanted to discover more about the genre. RCD Magazine was praised for its quality and diversity of music, as well as its informative and entertaining articles.

RCD Magazine is no longer in print, but it is still remembered by many rock enthusiasts as a valuable source of music and information. Some of the issues and CDs are available online or in second-hand shops for those who want to relive the glory days of rock music in the early 90s. (B)

  1. These magazine CDs were the big thing in their day. The Daily Mail went for this in a big way. so did The People, Guitar World, Mojo, The Daily Mirror and there was even a Cadbury's Crunchie CD. Some had good music, but others had just a few popular tunes and the rest was just rubbish - bands like Ken Crimpin' & His Melody Men et al: Although I don't know who they were as I made it up. But by the sounds of those unidentified groups on some of these cds, so did the sponsors. However the music mags had good stuff. But they were almost impossible to get outside of their publishing country.

There's an interesting article from 2005 at https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/free-cds-can-really-sell-music-magazines-but-the-2599385.php#content

Regardless of all that, this one's a goodie. Many thanks BB

    1. Hi hedspace,
      Thanks for the comment.
I do believe the sample CDs help sell the magazines. But is the content of the mags that attract most to them. The photos, the articles, and the advice and exposure to what's new. Of course, this is a promotion tool, but many people have learnt about new bands and older bands from these musical assets.
Also, the Sample CDs always have something to offer. Some are better than some albums that are issued.
      Cheers.
