VA - Nothing Less Than Brilliant! 650 Brit Girl Smashes of the Swinging Sixties (Updated Improved Remastered Expanded Super Deluxe Edition) (22CD) (2025)

PLEASE THANK K for this wonderful compilation

An updated and expanded edition of my original 2023 compilation, incorporating many recently released better sounding remasters with many tracks taken from the original master tapes.

This is really an expansion of the excellent ACE - British Beat Girls Series (2016-2025) 8CD set.

This compilation contains the majority of the Ace British Beat Girls (8CD) series, plus the RPM Cherry Red set Am I Dreaming? 80 Brit Girl Sounds of the 60s (3CD) (2017); Ace's Shel's Girls - From the Planet Records Vaults (2019); the RPM Dream Babes (8CD) series; It's So Fine - Pye Girls Are Go! (2CD) (2005); The Pye Girls Coloured My World - 32 Brit Girl Tunes of the Swinging Sixties (2CD) (2020); The Girls Are At It Again - UK Beat Girls 1964-1969 (2009); Decca Originals - The Girls' Scene (1999) and much much more.

Britain was the world’s undisputed centre of pop in the 1960s. Though male groups dominated the UK charts, each of the four main record labels had a girl singer to satisfy those teenagers in need of a heroine fix.

Together four of the girls - Sandie Shaw, Lulu, Dusty Springfield and Cilla Black - scored nearly 60 top 40 UK hits between 1963 and the end of the decade, including half a dozen number ones. Petula Clark, who was older and ended up with the unenviable ‘easy listening’ tag, added a further ten hits and one chart topper to the tally.

Dusty Springfield was the most successful British female performer, with six top 20 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen on the UK Singles Chart from 1963 to 1989. She is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and UK Music Hall of Fame. Her image, supported by a peroxide blonde bouffant hairstyle, evening gowns, and heavy make-up, as well as her flamboyant performances, made her an icon.

Sandie Shaw. This barefoot songstress became the first British entry to win the Eurovision Song Contest with "Puppet on a String" which hit number one in the UK in 1967. She had two further UK number one singles with “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me” (1964), and “Long Live Love” (1965). In 1984 she returned to the UK top 40, for the first time in 15 years with her cover of the Smiths song “Hand in Glove“.

Cilla Black hailed from Liverpool and knew the Beatles when they all played at The Cavern Club together and they championed her early career. Her singles “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and “You’re My World” both reached number one in the UK in 1964. She had 11 top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart between then and 1971. Later on Black very successfully hosted TV Chat and Game Shows and at one time was the highest paid entertainer on British TV.

Lulu is a Scottish singer-songwriter known for her powerful singing voice. She is best known for her 1964 hit “Shout” and "To Sir, with Love" from the 1967 film of the same name which was a US number one and became the best-selling US single of 1967.

Later in her career she had hits internationally including the title song to the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun.

Marianne Faithfull achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her hit single “As Tears Go By” and became one of the lead female artists during the British Invasion in the United States. Discovered by Andrew Loog Oldham, the manager of the Rolling Stones, Faithfull had a highly publicised romantic relationship with Mick Jagger. Her popularity was further enhanced by her film roles, such as I’ll Never Forget What’s ’is name (1967), The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968), and Hamlet (1969).

Helen Shapiro is a British pop singer, jazz singer, and actress best known for her two 1961 UK chart toppers, “You Don’t Know” and “Walkin’ Back to Happiness“, both recorded when she was just fourteen years old. When she went on tour in 1963. The Beatles were actually her support act.

Petula Clark had her first hit in 1954 with “The Little Shoemaker” - the first of her big UK hits. In late 1964 Clark’s global success extended to America with a four-year run of career-defining, often upbeat singles, many written or co-written by Tony Hatch (and Jackie Trent). These include her signature song “Downtown“, plus “I Know a Place“, “My Love“, “A Sign of the Times“, “I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love“, “Who Am I“, “Colour My World“, “This Is My Song” (by Charlie Chaplin), “Don’t Sleep in the Subway“, “The Other Man’s Grass Is Always Greener” and “Kiss Me Goodbye“. She has sold more than 68 million records worldwide.

Jackie Trent was a singer-songwriter and actress who was best known for co-writing (with Tony Hatch) the theme tunes to the dating game show Mr & Mrs for Border Television in 1975 and the Australian soap opera Neighbours in 1985. Her first single, “Pick Up the Pieces”, was released in 1962 and three years later she scored her first hit with “Where Are You Now (My Love)“.

Mary Hopkin a Welsh folk singer, was one of the earliest signings to the Beatles‘ Apple label, and she is best known for her 1968 UK number one single “Those Were the Days" which was produced by Paul McCartney. Her next single was “Goodbye“, written by McCartney (credited to Lennon-McCartney), and released on 26 March 1969.

Twinkle was an English singer-songwriter who had chart successes in the 1960s with her best known songs “Golden Lights" and "Terry". Her song “Terry” was a teenage tragedy song about the death of a boyfriend in a motorcycle crash. Big Jim Sullivan, Jimmy Page and Bobby Graham were among the high-profile star session musicians who played on the recording. The record caused a furore, accusations of bad taste leading to a ban from the BBC.

Billie Davis is an English female singer who is best remembered for the UK hit version of the song, “Tell Him” (1963) and “I Want You to Be My Baby” (1968). Davis was an early proponent of many of the fashion styles for which the 1960s are remembered: bobbed hair, long boots of the kind popularised by Honor Blackman in early episodes of The Avengers and leather mini-skirts.

Susan Maughan. Her most famous and successful song, “Bobby’s Girl” (a cover of the Marcie Blane single), reached number three in the UK Singles Chart at Christmas time in 1962. It also reached number six in the Norwegian chart in that year. Maughan had further minor UK hits entitled “Hand a Handkerchief to Helen” and “She’s New to You”.

Alma Cogan was an English singer in the 1950s and early 1960s. Dubbed the “Girl with the Giggle in Her Voice”, she was the highest paid British female entertainer of her era. Many of her recordings were covers of U.S. hits and “Bell Bottom Blues“, became her first hit. She was also famous for her obsession with glamourous gowns.

Julie Grant is an English pop music singer who had three hits on the UK Singles Chart with “Up on the Roof”, “Count on Me” and “Come to Me” (1964) She also recorded a cover version of “Every Day I Have to Cry” (1964).

She had every chance to become a major British pop star in the '60s, appearing regularly on television and performing live as supporting act on tour with many big stars. With an outstanding voice, it is incredible that all Julie achieved with her records was three minor UK hits out of fifteen singles.

Kiki Dee remained a music industry secret in the 60s despite releasing numerous high-quality singles and even joining Motown label at the end of the decade. Sadly, she had to wait until the mid-'70s before finding fame.

Samantha Jones. A one-time key member of the Vernons Girls, Liverpudlian Samantha Jones bidded fair for stardom in her own right in early-'60s. Though she achieved some success, her voice and her catalogue of great songs should have made her one of the biggest stars of the decade.

Tawny Reed. Welsh teenager Tawney Reed issued just two singles on the Pye label and one on New York’s famous Red Bird label, actually, she was the only Brit Girl to receive the distinction of having a release on the legendary New York label. Though she failed to score a hit, her gutsy vocals, often compared with Lulu's, have made her a favourite of fans of the Britgirl genre.

Glenda Collins was independent producer Joe Meek’s primary female singer. Between 1963 and 1966 she released a string of singles she’d recorded with him before his untimely death cut short her career.

Antoinette. 13-year-old Antoinette recorded half a dozen singles for Decca, Piccadilly and Columbia Records between 1964 and 1966, none of which were hits.

She is still performing today, though she now concentrates on jazz and goes by her married name, Toni Baxter.

Truly Smith. An underrated singer, with a style not so different from early Kiki Dee, Truly Smith is now remembered for a number of fantastic Northern Soul anthems issued by Decca, such as Chris Clark's 'I Wanna Go Back There Again', SmokeyRobinson's 'My Smile is Just a Frown Turned Upside Down' and Gerry Goffin/Carole King 'The Boy from Chelsea'.

Sharon Tandy. Blue-eyed soul, freakbeat and state-of-the-art Brit-girl pop, South African-born Sharon Tandy handled it all with consummate ease and one of the best voices of the '60s - a cross between Dusty Springfield and Julie Driscoll.

Peanut. Born Katherine Farthing in Trinidad she moved she moved to the UK in 1962 at the age of 11. After securing a contract with Pye Records she released four singles under the name Peanut during the mid 60s.

Barry St. John. Scottish singer Barry St John released some fine tunes in the mid-to-late 60s but they were largely ignored by the record-buying public. She had to wait a decade before they became sought after by Northern soul fans.

Dana Gillespie. Although she would eventually become most known as a blues singer, at the outset of her recording career in the mid-to late '60s, Dana Gillespie flirted with pop/rock, folk-rock, and mildly psychedelic baroque pop. All of those styles can be heard on her obscure 1968 debut album, 'Foolish Seasons' which is an undeniably interesting slice of eclectic late-'60s Swinging London-tinged pop.

Jan Panter. British singer Jan Panter issued just four singles in the UK and is best remembered for her work with German producer Mark Wirtz, notably on the 1966 fuzz guitar fest 'Scratch My Back'.

Tina Tott. 'Burning in the Background of My Mind' would have made an excellent A-side. Instead, it was consigned to the flip of Tina’s only 45 on the Pye label, 1969’s 'Take Away the Emptiness Too'. It remained an obscurity until the Northern Soul crowd took it to their collective bosom.

The Breakaways. British equivalent of LA's Blossoms, not only were The Breakaways the most in demand session singers of the swinging '60s, backing many of Tony Hatch' solo artists - including hits by Petula Clark, Jackie Trent and Julie Grant -, but also made some great records themselves, though they failed to make the charts.

Lorraine Silver. 13-year-old Lorraine Silver issued just two singles, neither of which was a hit at the time, but she later found popularity on the Northern soul dance circuit when her pounding 'Lost summer love' (1965) was rediscovered. A gem.

The Vernons Girls were an English musical ensemble of female vocalists, formed at the football pools company in '50s Liverpool, as a sixteen strong choir, but by the time they became successful, had been reduced to a trio. They are best remembered as a television act.

Tammy St. John. British teenage singer Tammy St John missed out on chart success but recorded several gems of the Brit Girl genre, like the dramatic 'Dark Shadows and Empty Hallways', which is considered by aficionados as one of the very best of the Brit Girl era, its fabulous B-side 'I Mustn’t cry' and The Chiffons' cover 'Nobody Knows What’s Goin’ On (In My Mind But Me)'.

Billie Davis. The career of Billie Davis was blighted by bad luck, preventing her from achieving the kind of success she deserved. Her late-'60s Decca recordings, when she released several interesting but unsuccessful blue-eyed soul covers, are the ones I like the most. She spent a great deal of time in my country, Spain, and still has very much a strong fan base here today.

The Paper Dolls. Complete with outrageous wigs, camp stage names and over-the-top outfits, The Paper Dolls cut quite a dash on the 60's music scene. Some people say they were the Spice Girls of that decade.

Adrienne Poster is better known for her acting than for her singing. A star of such classic 60s films as 'To sir with love' and 'Up the Junction', she had previously issued half a dozen singles for the Decca label between 1964 and 1966.

Sandra Barry. British singer Sandra Barry started out on the radio and in film before launching herself into the world of pop. In 1965 she joined the Pye record label, where she recorded a number of fine cuts written by Tony Hatch, like 'You Can Take It from Me' and 'End of the Line'.

Jackie Lee. Although Jackie Lee had little commercial success - just two hits in Britain - this is a poor indication of her stature in the British music business, particularly during the '60s. Having lived and breathed music from her childhood in Ireland to 1973, when she prematurely retired due to vocal complications and throat trouble, Jackie made many marvellous recordings over a twenty-year career and today remains a respected vocalist who has high collectability status.

The White Horses is a 1965 television series co-produced by RTV Ljubljana (now RTV Slovenija) of Yugoslavia and German TV (Südwestfunk).

The story follows the adventures of a teenage girl Julia (Helga Anders) who leaves Belgrade to spend a holiday on a stud farm run by her Uncle Dimitri (Helmuth Schneider), where with the help of head groom Hugo (Franz Muxeneder), white Lipizzaner horses are raised.

In the first episode, stallion Boris is stolen by Romani people who dye his white coat brown so that no one will recognise him. Julia and Hugo set off to find Boris and upon his recovery an affinity is formed between girl and horse.

The series, called Počitnice v Lipici in Slovenian and Ferien in Lipizza ("Holidays in Lipica") in German, comprised thirteen 25-minute black and white episodes.

A dubbed version was broadcast in the United Kingdom from 1968, and repeated for many years afterwards, the last showing taking place early in January 1978. The dubbed soundtracks were long thought lost, but audio tapes of twelve of the thirteen episodes have been located.

The UK theme song - written by Michael Carr and Ben Nisbet and later back dubbed onto all versions, was simply titled "White Horses", and credited to "Jacky" - was sung by Irish-born Jackie Lee. It became a top 10 hit in the UK charts in April 1968. The book The Penguin Television Companion claimed it to be the best television theme in history. Her jazz-styled album of the same name was also released in 1968, which included contributions from Dudley Moore as pianist.

By 1970, 'Jacky' reverted to 'Jackie Lee' and had another hit record; "Rupert" from the TV show based on the famous cartoon character, Rupert Bear (inaccurately referred to as "Rupert the Bear" in the song's lyrics). This recording also had a place in the "Best TV themes of all time" list from The Penguin TV Companion at Number 7, further consolidating Lee's latter-day reputation. A tie-in album, Jackie's Junior Choice, was released on Pye Records (PKL 5503) in 1971, followed by the similar, Rupert and Other Junior Favourites on Pye's budget Golden Guinea label (GSGL 10492) in 1973, which also included Jackie's recording of another children's series, Inigo Pipkin.

It was shortly after this that she retired from singing, due to vocal complications and throat problems. Nonetheless, her singing continues to be held in high regard. It has been said that her work has "firmly embedded itself in the subconscious of a generation".

Barbara Ruskin was one of Britain's few singer-songwriters in the '60s, releasing a number of great singles between 1965 and 1972, none of which charted in Britain and America although they did in Europe, especially in Germany, and co-hosting a radio programme for the BBC.

Nita Rossi released just four singles for Piccadilly records in the mid 60s, including the great 'Untrue Unfaithful (That Was You)' and the Northern Soul stomper 'Something to Give', before slipping into obscurity.

Beryl Marsden. Born in Liverpool, Beryl Marsden began singing at the famous Cavern Club and managed to release two singles for Decca and another three for Columbia between 1963 and 1966. In the next decade she became a session singer and even went on to perform as a member of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas in the 80s.

Dodie West released a handful of fine records along de 60s on the Piccadilly label. She is best remembered for songs like 'In Deep of Night' and 'Thinking of You'.

Val McKenna. With her bleached blond hair, sunglasses and PVC cap, 16-year-old Val McKenna embodied mid-60s youth. As a singer-songwriter, she enjoyed a long career in the music business.

Muriel Day was the first person from Northern Ireland to represent the Republic of Ireland at the Eurovision song contest, but is perhaps best loved for her Northern soul stonker 'Nine Times Out of Ten'. She was also chosen as Ireland's Eurovision contestant in 1969 with 'The Wages of Love', but although the song was a great hit in Ireland, it only finished seventh internationally.

Tiffany. Former Liverbirds lead singer Tiffany fronted Tiffany's Dimensions before going solo and releasing two singles in the mid-'60s: the cracking Jackie de Shannon-penned 'Am I Dreaming?', in 1965, and a version of The Downliners Sect's 'Find Out What's Happening', backed by The Thoughts, the following year.

Paula Parfitt. Little-known singer Paula Parfitt recorded just one single, but it's no slouch. 'Love Is Beautiful' remains one of the true classics of blue-eyed Northern Soul. Virtually nothing is known of Parfitt's life before or after her brief recording career -- she was born and raised in London, signing to producer Milton Samuels' local Beacon label in 1969. 'Love Is Beautiful' was actually slotted as the B-side of her lone single, behind the less memorable 'I'm Gonna Give You Back Your Ring,' but it's the lilting, euphoric flipside that remains Parfitt's legacy.

Ayshea (Brough). Born in Highgate, London, and educated at Arts Educational School, London, Ayshea Hague was trained in ballet, music, drama and dance. She made her film debut as an uncredited extra in the film Tom Thumb (1958). As a teenager, she was signed to her first record label, Fontana, which released her debut single, "Eeny Meeny", in 1965. In 1965 and 1966 she toured in the UK with Jimmy Cliff as part of his band The New Generation.

She made appearances on television shows such as Thank Your Lucky Stars and Discotheque. Granada TV's producer Muriel Young hired Ayshea to host her own pop show, Lift Off with Ayshea, in 1969. The series ran for 122 episodes until 1974.

After being romantically linked with Steve Winwood, Chas Chandler and Rod Stewart, she married Cat Stevens's record producer, Chris Brough (the son of ventriloquist Peter Brough), who produced her records and was her manager.

Ayshea was a regular on quiz shows such as The Golden Shot and Celebrity Squares. As an actress, she appeared on Jason King and had a recurring role on UFO, the Gerry Anderson live-action series.

After Ayshea and Chris Brough divorced in the early 1970s she dated Roy Wood who wrote and produced her single "Farewell". They were engaged for a year but never married. In 1975, she represented Great Britain at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo with a song written for her by Elton John, entitled "The Flowers Will Never Die".

Spanning the full spectrum of the scene, known for its gratifying diversity, this 22CD box set offers slick originals and intriguing covers, from early girls to late girls, beat girls, folk girls, hippy girls and mod girls. Here, you’ll also find the brash teenagers, the raw belters, the wistful balladeers, the brassy pub singers, the breathy harmonisers and the bluesy shouters. There are Essex girls, lasses from Lancashire, Glaswegians and hey there Geordie girls, Chelsea debs and daughters of Cardiff and Coventry, Stoke and Southend. The Commonwealth gets a nod too, with Kiwi gals and Caribbean queens. Not forgetting schoolgirls and secretaries, convent girls and actresses, daughters of diplomats, god-daughters of royalty and stars before they were stars.

  1. K Thanks for this. To be honest I never got all the way thru your first version. I was there (60s) and I did not remember all the names you dug up. I hoped that I might remember the songs if not the young ladies. Now with these updates and extras I will try again. It will be fun to travel back there again.
