SONGS ABOUT ROCK AND ROLL

VA - 50 Songs about Rock and Roll (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

Most of these tracks on this multi-genre compilation have the words Rock n Roll in their title and all are about rock n roll. The music herein is presented in date order. The earliest song here about Rock n Roll is by Champion Jack Dupree & His Combo titled "Old Time Rock And Roll" [1957]. The singer narrates - “Now listen here, I want all you folks to know, that this here Old Time Rock and Roll, we been rockin' this since 1929..."

It got me to thinking what is rock and roll and when did it start. Was Rock n Roll born in 1929 or earlier... This question may be answered in the BONUS section below...

Do you agree with popular stories documented about its origins? Some comments I've read suggest Rock and Roll was born 1951 but also acknowledges that it may have been earlier. Various recordings dating back to the 1940s and 1950s have been cited as the first rock and roll record. A number of sources have considered the first to be "Rocket 88", which was recorded in 1951 by Ike Turner and his band, but credited to his saxophonist and the song's vocalist Jackie Brenston. "Rocket 88 war sold to CHESS Records. Rocket 88" (originally written as Rocket "88") is a rhythm and blues song that was first recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 3 or 5, 1951 (accounts differ)."

Rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in the United States in the early to mid-1950s. It derived most directly from the rhythm and blues music of the 1940s, which itself developed from earlier blues, boogie woogie, jazz and swing music, and was also influenced by gospel, country and western, and traditional folk music. Rock and roll in turn provided the main basis for the music that, since the mid-1960s, has been generally known simply as rock music.  The phrase "rocking and rolling" originally described the movement of a ship on the ocean, but it was used by the early 20th century, both to describe a spiritual fervour and as a sexual analogy. Various gospel, blues and swing recordings used the phrase before it became used more frequently – but still intermittently – in the late 1930s and 1940s, principally on recordings and in reviews of what became known as "rhythm and blues" music aimed at black audiences. In 1951, Cleveland-based disc jockey Alan Freed began playing this music style while popularizing the term "rock and roll" to describe it."

Anyway this compilation is really about artists singing about Rock and Roll, and not about its origins.
So enjoy their work and keep on rocking.

  4. Hi BB - another great compilation. I was thinking The Coasters song "Baby, That Is Rock and Roll" would have been a good fit. I'm not trying to nitpick in light of such massive generosity but this set seems to have 49 and not 50 songs with the Velvet Underground tune apparently missing. Not a big deal to me but I thought you should know about it.
