AUSTRALIAN
VA - Can't Stop It! Australian Post-Punk 1978-82 [2001]
This compilation is a revelation. Can’t Stop It! digs deep into the dusty corners of Australia’s post-punk underground, where bands made noise on their own term, raw, weird, and wonderfully out of step with the mainstream. These weren’t polished acts chasing radio play. They were suburban outsiders, art-school dropouts, and sonic explorers pushing boundaries in bedrooms, garages, and tiny venues.
From the jagged minimalism of Essendon Airport to the chaotic clatter of Slugfuckers, the set captures a moment when experimentation was survival. There’s beauty here too, The Apartments’ “Help” aches with feeling, while The Particles’ “Apricot’s Dream” floats like a half-remembered postcard. It’s not just music; it’s mood, place, and attitude.
Compiled by Guy Blackman and David Nichols, this is cultural archaeology with a pulse. These tracks weren’t meant to last, but they did. And now they hum with new life, reminding us that Australia’s post-punk scene wasn’t just alive, it was electric. (B)
