MATT MONRO

Matt Monro - The Singer's Singer [2001] (4 x CD's)

Matt Monro (born Terence Edward Parsons, 1 December 1930 – 7 February 1985) was an English singer who became one of the most popular entertainers on the international music scene during the 1950's and 1970's. Known as The Man with the Golden Voice, he filled cabarets, nightclubs, music halls, and stadiums across the world in his 30-year career. All Music has described Monro as "one of the most underrated pop vocalists of the '60s", who "possessed the easiest, most perfect baritone in the business". His recordings include the UK Top 10 hits: "Portrait of My Love", "My Kind of Girl", "Softly As I Leave You", "Walk Away" and "Yesterday". He also recorded several film themes such as "From Russia with Love" for the James Bond film of the same name, "Born Free" for the film of the same name and "On Days Like These" for The Italian Job. (Wikipedia)

Back in the great musical sixties there were many singers with wonderful voices, but a Matt Monto's commanding voice stood out above the rest and whenever a song came over the airwaves, it was clear Matt Monro possessed one of the greatest singing voices ever...stunning "The Singer's Singer" Box Set is a must have for anyone who enjoys the finest the world of music has to offer, assembled brilliantly with love by daughter Michele Monro, engrossing essay plus tributes by notables such as Sinatra make for a moving & fascinating read, music lavishly contained in all four discs is simply sublime, making one fall in love all over again with that warm lush voice that is as good as great singing gets. In addition of all the wonderful hits, songs like "If I Never Sing Another Song" or "The Long And Winding Road" show a remarkable artist who could make any song a memorable & magical listening experience! Bravo Matt Monro and RIP. (Amazon)

Had Matt Monro been American his name would have been up there with Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and the rest. He was popular in America, in fact several of the recordings in this collection were made there. Reportedly, Frank Sinatra claimed Matt Monro to be one of his favourite singers. Praise indeed.

  4. This is an excellent overview of Mr Munro's career and is very much appreciated. For those who are interested there is an excellent biography, penned by one of his daughters that gives chapter an verse to his rise from humble origins to stardom and ultimately his untimely death at the age of 55. It is titled "The Singer's Singer: The Life and Music of Matt Munro" by Michele Munro and published by Titan Books. Well worth a read. Thanks for posting this set and bringing Matt to a wider audience.

    1. Thanks Man from Mordor.
Matt Monro has one of the best voices and he is severely underrated. He left us too early.
Thanks for mentioning the book written by his daughter. I am sure people will seek it out.
My mother used to love him singing "Born Free", I always remember her face when I hear that song.

      Cheers

  5. Thanks
"Portrait of My Love" is my favourite. My mum claimed that she saw him singing in a pub when she was young. I used to hear him all the time on the radio 50s 60s.
