VA - Tammi Show 1964 Companion Discs [1964]  (4 x CD's)

To support the Tammi show video, here are 4 sets that represent the music that was around in 1964, the year the TAMMI show appeared.

VA - Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits [1964]  Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1964 is a compilation album released by Rhino Records in 1988, featuring ten hit recordings from 1964. The album includes four songs that reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The remaining six tracks each reached the Hot 100's Top 5. In 1993, the album was re-issued and replaced two chart toppers ("Do Wah Diddy Diddy" & "Rag Doll") with two other songs, "Chapel of Love" (another Hot 100 chart topper) and the Top 5 hit "Under the Boardwalk."  Absent from the track lineup were songs by The Beatles, which had the year's No. 1 song of the year, "I Want to Hold Your Hand". A disclaimer on the back of the album stated that licensing restrictions made the Beatles' tracks unavailable for inclusion on the album. A similar licensing restriction would preclude songs by The Rolling Stones from being included on other volumes in the Rhino "Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits" and "Billboard Top Hits" series. (Wikipedia)

VA - Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles 1964   These are the Billboard magazine Hot 100 number one hits of 1964. That year, 11 acts achieved their first number one song, such as The Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Mary Wells, The Dixie Cups, Peter and Gordon, The Beach Boys, The Supremes, The Animals, Manfred Mann, The Shangri-Las, and Lorne Greene. Dean Martin, despite already having a song hit number one prior to the creation of the Hot 100, earns his first number one song on the chart. Bobby Vinton, The Beatles, and The Supremes were the only acts to have more than one song hit number one that year, which The Beatles had the most with six. (Wikipedia)

VA - Time Life AM Gold 1964 [1991]  Much like Time-Life's other series chronicling popular music, volumes in the "AM Gold" series covered a specific time period, including single years in some volumes and stylistic trends in others. Each volume was issued on a compact disc, cassette or (on "Super Hits"-titled volumes issued in 1990) 2-LP vinyl record set. Individual volumes generally contained 22 tracks, and represented the highlighted time period's most popular and noteworthy tracks. Also included was a booklet, containing liner notes written by some of the most respected historians of the genre, photographs of the artists, and information on the songs (writers, performers and peak position on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart). (Wikipedia)

VA - Top Of The Pops 1964 [2007] Top of the Pops (TOTP) is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. Top of the Pops was the world's longest running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each weekly show consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Official Charts Company states "performing on the show was considered an honour, and it pulled in just about every major player. (Wikipedia)

  1. What a fine slice and cross-section of a younger, more-innocent, and very-exciting year. '64 is just barely outside the reach of all but my faintest memories... but the profound effects of the groups (with a nod, of course, to the missing Beatles and Stones) and sound and nascent youth movement have lasted through to this day, and shaped us all. Thanks, Butter; cheers!

    1. Hi Aging Child,
I was 9, but my neighbor (she) was 14 and into music. As we were friends, we used to listen to a lot of music... Ah Those were the days, my friend, I thought they would never end... we never looked to the future at that age so I tried to enjoy every moment.
Have a great week end. Or as we say in S'tralia," Havagoodwegend mate"

      Cheers

  3. I was 10 yrs old with four older siblings, 2 boys, (A folkie, and fan of novelty) and two girls who're into the innocent rock & roll of the time. I liked the folkies, but when I heard the Beatles' take on "Twist & Shout" I became a rocker. Now I'm retired and I listen to all kinds of music from eveywhere and everytime. Your blog has been a good source for quite a while and your mystery dips have been very valuable to me. I should have thanked you long ago

  4. Thanks for this batch, BB. 1964 was the beginning of some seismic changes in the music world and a year of fascinating contrasts. It was also a year of some really great music!

  5. I assume we are talking about the TAMI Show. It was an acronym for "Teenage Awards Music International".
