Benny Goodman & His Orchestra - Complete RCA-Victor recordings 1935-39 (208 tracks)
Perhaps the most brilliant clarinetist of jazz, Benny Goodman was also one of its prime bandleaders. His rise to fame in the mid-1930 heralded in the “swing craze” that would last approximately a decade, bringing jazz fully into the mainstream in the process. This makes Goodman one of the most influential musical figures of the twentieth century. Goodman was a musical perfectionist and his performances always had an impeccable quality. Unlike many other white swing bands, he always remained firmly grounded in the jazz tradition and he made history by hiring black star musicians into his all-white band. [New World Encyclopedia]
Goodman spent the late 1920s and early 1930s traveling the country playing in bands led by Red Nichols, Ben Selvin, and many others. In 1934, he got his first big break. Putting together his own band for a local venue that was prematurely shut down, Goodman found a spot headlining on a new NBC radio program called Let’s Dance. These regular performances created a nationwide audience for his big band sound, and it was this audience that would eventually go wild for the Benny Goodman Band in live performances at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles, the Congress Hotel in Chicago, and the Paramount Theater in New York. His musical achievement reached its pinnacle in 1938, when his band blew the lid off of Carnegie Hall (the live recording of which was to become one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time). This is a compilation of the complete recordings of Benny Goodman and His Orchestra for the RCA Victor label during the period 1935-1939. The foundation of these 208 tracks is the 1992 Japanese boxed set The RCA Years 1935-1939. To date, it is the only officially released digital version of Goodman's complete RCA-Victor recordings. It used masters created for the 1987 LP release and collectors generally consider its audio quality to be very good, given its age. I have upgraded a number of its tracks from other, superior releases, primarily the three volumes issued by Hep Jazz, which were transferred and mastered by John R. T. Davies: Benny Goodman Plays Fletcher Henderson (Vols. 1 & 2), and Benny Goodman Plays Plays Jimmy Mundy. I also used most of The Centennial Collection and several tracks from The King of Swing, both transferred and mastered by Doug Pomeroy.

that makes no sense to me. why mix inside folders at all. I never use m3u files as I play what I enjoy not someones playlist

ReplyDeleteLong time listener, first time caller here. Here's what I do when something I've downloaded is a mess. Freeware called MP3Tag. Either drag the whole folder into the program or pull up the m3u file (if you want to keep the playlist order), highlight everything and change the artist/album/disc no/track no/etc to your liking. If it's an untagged bunch of FLAC files, you can pull the metadata right from discogs with cover art et al. It has saved me SO much time and frustration in my years of browsing music blogs. Anyway, that's what I did as soon as I downloaded this archive. Just copied and pasted the title from the post here, auto-numbered the files, and it's pretty as a picture. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't endure life in this sphere without MP3Tag. Also useful for tag-resistant files is Better File Rename, which lets you edit file names (and folder names) individually or in bulk, until you get them just absolutely perfect. .

ReplyDeleteMy apologies, as I failed to mention that this compilation is organized in chronological order. It may appear at first glance to be a mess but I can assure you it is not. Using a playlist allows one to maintain the original album and tag structure. Of course you're free to do with the files as you wish but collectors concerned with discographical accuracy might appreciate my method.

If you already downloaded the compilation, please download the file named "For previous downloaders.rar" and add it to your master folder. It contains a new folder with the missing files and a corrected playlist. First-time downloaders should grab the file named "Benny Goodman complete RCA-Victor recordings 1935-9.rar" which I have corrected.
