GREAT BASSLINES IN ROCK
VA - Basslines (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3
Basslines are usually simple, interesting musical themes or phrases that are repeated, with variation, throughout the song. A good bassline is the heart and soul of a song. Guitar solos and vocal gymnastics are great but don’t be fooled, it's the low-end is what gets toes tapping and people moving. It is true that there are a number of instruments that deliver that rhythm such as the electric bass, double bass, cello, tuba or keyboard whether piano, Hammond organ, electric organ, or synthesize, but this compilation tries to highlight the electric bass.
Some basslines are used as intros and some simply pull together the overall rhythmic pulse of the song. Bassline riffs usually accentuate the chord tones of each chord, generally on the first beat of the measure, which helps to define a song's key. Basslines generally align with the drums. Then other rhythm instruments join in to create a more interesting rhythmic variation. The type of rhythmic pulse used in basslines varies widely in different types of music but the primary role of the bass in a rhythm section remains the same, defining the harmonic structure. When we listen to music we all love to hear a memorable start to get us going, but no guitar shred or drum fill will ever compete with a perfectly executed bass intro.
Presented here, in no particular order, are the choicest riffs or grooves created by a bass guitar which are so good they elevate what might be an average song into a massive, foot-stomping song too remember. These are some of my favourite basslines in music together with a few that you may not know. Let’s celebrate all that is great about those basslines... Enjoy!

I saw an interview with Jack White and he said Seven Nation Army was played on a guitar, he didn't use a bass. Nonetheless it is a bassline. I just mention this out of interest.
ReplyDeleteHi Bob Mac.
DeleteYes, it still is a bassline. I read that too. The "Seven Nation Army" guitar riff written by singer and guitarist Jack White at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne, while the White Stripes were on the Australian leg of their tour in January 2002. He played it on the A and E strings of his guitar, tuning the guitar to open A tuning (low to high: E A E A C# E) and using an octave pedal for the intro. The riff is played on the A string, starting on the 7th fret. (That is true)
Cheers.
This collection looks awesome. I keep getting the message that the links are corrupt, though...
ReplyDeleteI'm getting the same message. Files won't unzip.
ReplyDeleteHi Ralph,
DeleteSorry to hear that. I have tested the files and there are working well when tested. I did a download today and it was very fast. Mike (visitor) says it now works. I guess it may have been a glitch at Pixeldrain. I suggest you try again and see if it is working again. If it is still not working, you may need to use an alternative browser or VPN. Good luck
Cheers.
Looking forward to this BB but I am getting the same message from pixeldrain

pixeldrain is great especially since krakenfiles is not working as well as it once did. All the other pixeldrain downloads worked great [and fast!] except CD 1 and 2 of this post [CD3 did download]. Copy/pasted from the Edge browser to Chrome and they downloaded there no problem. Can't explain but thanks again.
DeleteGlad it worked for you, Yoeshka.
DeleteIt is always frustrating when that happens.
Cheers.
Hi there!
ReplyDeleteThe first song that came to mind by just reading the headline was "It Happened Today" by Curved Air (1. Album 1970).
Great track, Dr. Fu Man Chu.
DeleteI hope you enjoy this set.
Cheers.
Pixeldrain is not downloading this set....makes sense to me as I really like well thought out and executed basslines. Improvisation and originality helps too.
ReplyDeleteI seldom make comment....love living in the shadows, but sometimes......

Will at UCB

Thanks for this collection of fine music! I have most of it but thanks for reminding me of some great tracks I had not heard in a long time. I would like to suggest my favourite bass line: the one from "Weather The Windmill" by Mick Karn.
ReplyDeleteHi Wolfgang,
DeleteGreat to hear. I think there is room for another volume of Bassline tracks. I have received a few suggestions. A great suggestion from yourself. Let's see what happens.
Cheers.
Well, the links appear to be working now - hooray!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear, Mike.
DeleteSometimes Pixeldrain does maintenance and it may slow down.
Cheers.
HOW....Did the Stranglers miss out!!!?
ReplyDeleteCheers
Stephen
Hi Stephen,
DeleteI think there is room for another volume of Bassline tracks.
Cheers.
The Stranglers could no doubt fill the whole Volume! Especially with tunes as: "Down In Th Shadows", "Peaches" etc.........I actually lived in Guildford when the Stranglers were around and saw them many, many times as a live band and a bit around town. Excellent live band, sadly members are leaving with the lights out!!!
DeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, APANTA BAPANTA.
DeleteCheers.
My daughter plays bass, so just the word makes me think of her and hope she's makin' some music while she's making a career up in Seattle. I look forward to exploring this collection.
ReplyDeleteHi efreed.
DeleteI hope you will enjoy it. You could share it with your daughter as well. She may have some ideas for additional tracks too.
Cheers.
Hi BB
ReplyDeleteI tried to dl when it not clear if the links were working. I came back today and 2 and 3 were fine but I can't get #1 to work. Any chance you can help?
Hi lemonoflag.
DeleteThe links were working fine. Over 500 dl's each.
I just download Pt.1 in a few seconds.
It is always confusing to me why this happens to some and not others.
I suggest you try again later., sometimes that works. Good luck.
Let me know how you go.
Cheers.
Got it!
DeleteThat is good to hear, lemonflag.
DeleteI assume you downloaded it without issue.
I didn't change a thing, it's just the time of day sometimes.
Cheers.
