The Story of Pop was the title of the original 26-part documentary series first broadcast on BBC Radio 1 between September 1973 and March 1974. The series was introduced by Alan Freeman (Alan Leslie Freeman, MBE (6 July 1927 – 27 November 2006), sometimes nicknamed "Fluff", was an Australian-born British disc jockey and radio personality in the United Kingdom for 40 years, best known for presenting Pick of the Pops from 1961 to 2000) and produced by Tim Blackmore. Alan Freeman explores the history of pop music. A 26-part "weekly encyclopedia" was also published by the BBC to coincide with the series.

As was stated back then, "The history of pop music is not a long one; less than 20 years from the first eruption of rock & roll to the present day. But already it is a story packed with incident, with phenomena, with personalities and with stars. The story of pop is the story of young people, the story of the people who read this. For the first time in its history, pop is being studied as a rich source of social and sociological material covering the last two decades. "

The Radio One series, is a unique chronicle of the birth and rise of a music that has spread across the world, leveling all boundaries. In conjunction with the radio show a 26-part "weekly encyclopedia" was published. Readers outside the UK, however, will find that the publication is complete in itself, providing a comprehensive history in its own right.

For 26 weeks in the UK, BBC Radio One told that tale with the spoken word and music, while the publication complemented it with the written word and pictures. Together they showed the listener / reader exactly how, why, when and where pop was created and progressed. And show who the people were who formed and performed it. By the end of the series pop experts added to their knowledge of the subject, and pop fans understood and appreciated more fully the music they love. This series presented the most complete and authoritative record of pop ever compiled. Each week this publication reflected and expanded on the subject with actual Stars featuring in the radio program, and in addition dealt with those topics that couldn't be fully explored in the scope of an hour-long radio documentary alone.

Throughout 1994 Alan Freeman presented a revised and expanded version of the Radio 1 series The Story of Pop, broadcast in 52 hour-long episodes. Here are the 52 hours of "The Story of Pop" as presented in 1994.  Also included here are the 26-part weekly encyclopaedia  that were published. These are presented in both PDF and JPEG formats.
