Vangelis, born Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou in Volos, Greece, on March 29, 1943 - 17 May 2022, was a prolific composer and musician known for his unique blend of electronic and orchestral music. He has created soundtracks for some of the most iconic films of the 20th century, including "Chariots of Fire" (1981), "Blade Runner" (1982), and "1492: Conquest of Paradise" (1992), as well as numerous solo albums.

Vangelis' interest in music began at a young age when he started playing the piano and other instruments. He formed his first band, The Forminx, in the early 1960s and gained popularity in Greece with hits such as "Jambalaya" and "Tom Dooley". In the late 1960s, he began to experiment with electronic music and formed the progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child with Demis Roussos and Loukas Sideras. The band released several successful albums, including "666" (1972), a concept album based on the Book of Revelation.

After Aphrodite's Child disbanded, Vangelis embarked on a solo career and released his debut album, "Earth" (1973), which was followed by a string of critically acclaimed albums. His music was known for its expansive soundscapes, blending electronic and orchestral elements to create unique and memorable compositions.  In addition to his solo work, Vangelis also collaborated with other artists, including Jon Anderson of Yes. The duo released several albums together, including "Short Stories" (1980) and "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" (1981), which featured the hit single "I'll Find My Way Home".

Vangelis' work as a film composer began in the 1970s, and he quickly gained a reputation for his ability to create evocative and memorable soundtracks.  

Throughout his career, Vangelis has remained a dedicated and innovative musician, continually pushing the boundaries of electronic and orchestral music. His influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary musicians, and his impact on the world of film music is immeasurable. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to music, including an Academy Award, several Golden Globe awards, and a Grammy award. Today, Vangelis remains a revered and influential figure in the world of music.

In 2017, Vangelis released a13-disc box set entitled “Delectus”.  It features a chosen selection of his early discographic work.  The mammoth collection includes all of his albums on Vertigo and Polydor, recently signed by Universal and remastered (from the original first-generation master tapes) for the first time ever under the legendary composer’s own supervision.  Presented in a lavish box with an essay and a plethora of rare photographs, the discs are housed in two die-cut, gatefold disc holders within a rigid 242mm square slipcase, and accompanied by a 64-page book illustrating a period of his prolific career of the iconic Maestro. Most of the photographs have never before been seen and were recently selected from Vangelis' private archives. 

“I always welcome remastering my old work for two basic reasons” - explains Vangelis - “firstly, I get the opportunity to bring the sounds to today’s standards, secondly, it gives me the chance to go through the experiences and memories of the time.”

"Delectus" is presented as an outer box which contain two large die-cut wallets to hold all of the discs. It gathers together Vangelis’ seminal albums “Earth”, “L’Apocalypse Des Animaux”,  “China”, “See You Later”, “Antarctica”, “Mask”, “Opera Sauvage”,“Chariots of Fire”, “Soil Festivities” and “Invisible Connections”, plus his collaborative recordings with Jon Anderson as ‘Jon & Vangelis’ - “Short Stories”, “The Friends of Mister Cairo” & “Private Collection”. The remastered originals will be complemented with rare B-sides and 4 previously unreleased tracks, "Neighbours Above" (previously unreleased), "My love", "Domestic Logic 1" (on the See You Later disc) and "Song Is" (on the Jon & Vangelis disc: Private Collection) all previously unreleased on CD. The bonus tracks were earlier released on vinyl singles but have never appeared on CD before. (B)
