CRIME JAZZ

VA - Crime Jazz (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Crime jazz is a genre of music that emerged in the mid-1950s to accompany film noir movies and hard-boiled detective/crime-themed TV shows. Crime jazz is a style of music that is characterized by gritty, moody, and suspenseful melodies that create a sense of tension and danger. It combines elements of jazz, blues, and orchestral music to create a tense and dramatic atmosphere. It often features instruments such as saxophone, trumpet, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, as well as strings, horns, and percussion. Some of the characteristics of crime jazz are fast tempo, syncopated rhythms, dissonant chords, and chromatic melodies.  Crime jazz music is also known as detective music or noir jazz. (Wikipedia)

The best of this music is atmospheric. You can almost smell the perfume of a woman as she brushes close to you, the stale smell of a cigarette smoldering in an ashtray, the clink of ice cubes in a glass sitting on a wet bar top, the sights, sounds, smells--the feel of late night big city streets--the distant howl of a police siren, the click of a woman's high heels as she walks away, or the click of a gun being cocked. And, just maybe, that unmistakable sound of a switchblade knife opening. But there's also the more sophisticated sound of a champagne cork popping, the swish of a swizzle stick in a dry Martini, a woman's laughter, or the smooth, low roar of a low-slung import car's motor as it drives off with that babe you were checking out in the lounge earlier. But everyone will form their own scenes in their mind's-eye listening to this great music.

Here are 75 crime jazz music tracks that will keep you in suspense. Enjoy!

  1. Why did the criminal always carry a stick of butter in his pocket?

Because he wanted to make a smooth getaway!

    1. Hi rostasi.
      😀
I thought he needed to grease the palms of the corrupt cops and judges.
      Cheers.

  2. The visual of your box! Hats off BB! Your compilation reminds me of a series of excellent compilations on crime published in the 90s (Crime Jazz in First/Second Degree, Jazz noir...). This territory is endless. A composer that we regularly forget but that's a detail: Jerry Fielding. Congratulations for your work BB.
