K  Special 1980      VA - The 150 Best Singles of 1980 (Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (8xCD's)

My own compilation of what I consider to be the 150 best singles released around the world in 1980.

This is what NOW Yearbook '80 should look like in terms of track listing! https://superdeluxeedition.com/news/now-yearbook-80/

The 1980's saw the emergence of electronic dance music and new wave, also known as Modern Rock. As disco fell out of fashion in the decade's early years, genres such as post-disco, Italo disco, Euro disco, and dance-pop became more popular. Rock music continued to enjoy a wide audience. Soft rock, glam metal, thrash metal, shred guitar characterized by heavy distortion, pinch harmonics, and whammy bar abuse became very popular. Adult contemporary, quiet storm, and smooth jazz gained popularity.

The 1980's are commonly remembered for a great increase in the use of digital recording, associated with the usage of synthesizers, with synth-pop music and other electronic genres featuring non-traditional instruments increasing in popularity.

1980 was a tumultuous year for pop music. While exciting moments included Kate Bush becoming the first British female artist to score a Number 1 album, and Ozzy Osbourne released his breakthrough debut Blizzard of Ozz, the year also saw the tragic deaths of Joy Division's Ian Curtis and John Lennon.  It was also a busy year at the top end of the UK Official Singles Chart, with 24 songs reaching the summit across 12 months. The longest-running Number 1 of the year, at four weeks, was 'Don't Stand So Close to Me' by The Police, and ranks as the UK's best-selling song of 1980 with estimated sales of 808,000, according to the Official Charts Company.

The Police's third UK Number 1 easily claimed 1980's top seller, finishing 28,000 ahead of its closest competitor, Barbra Streisand's 'Woman in Love' (780k). The singer's track, written by Bee Gees brothers Barry and Robin Gibb, was her first and only UK Number 1 single, logging three weeks at the summit across October and November.

In third is Scottish singer Kelly Marie with 'Feels Like I'm in Love' (760k). The track, which spent two weeks at Number 1 in September that year, was originally intended for Elvis Presley, who recorded it in 1977 but died before it was released. Close behind in fourth is ABBA's 'Super Trouper' (709k), the band's ninth and final UK chart-topping single, while French duo Ottawan round out the Top 5 with 'D.I.S.C.O' (706k), a hit across Europe and a Number 2 smash in the UK.

Further down the Top 50, there are multiple entries for Blondie, who scored a trio of chart-toppers that year with 'The Tide Is High', 'Atomic' and 'Call Me', while Madness also make three entries despite failing to bag a Number 1 that year, with 'Baggy Trousers', 'My Girl' and 'Embarrassment'.

Other big Number 1s from 1980 in the Top 50 best-sellers include 'Geno' by Dexys Midnight Runners, Kenny Rogers' 'Coward of the County' and David Bowie's 'Ashes to Ashes'. The Jam also went straight in at Number 1 with 'Going Underground', the first time since Slade achieved the same success three times with 'Cum On Feel the Noize', 'Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me' and 'Merry Xmas Everybody' all in 1973.

Enjoy!

  1. Nothing to disagree with here. Even tracks that were not really part of my listening then, I now appreciate. And good to see Japan there - I was a big fan from Quiet life onwards, but they were much derided at the time, so good to see they are still treasured.

  4. I think Julie Andrews (The Sound of Music spent 70 weeks at number 1) might have something to say about that Kate Bush claim but anyway its impressive that you can put together a collection of 150 singles worth recalling from 1980.

I certainly couldn't have done. It was all a bit of an anti-climax after the late 1970's and particularly after Going Underground / Dreams of Children (one of my favourite singles of all time) had been released and John Lennon assassinated. The rest of the year musically largely disappeared for me. Pity you didn't include 'Dreams' as it is one of Weller's finest tracks and the single was a double A but it was largely ignored by DJ's at the time.

Also a quick shout for Secret Affair (Sound of Confusion), Merton Parkas (Put You In The Picture), The Purple Hearts (My Life's A Jigsaw), Nine Below Zero (Home work), Red Beans And Rice (That Driving Beat), The Killermeters (Twisted Wheel) and Squire (My Mind Goes Round In Circles) amongst others as 1980, not that the charts (Ska aside) really reflected it much, was the year of the Mod Revival. One heady summer of post Quadrophenia bank holiday mayhem and it all started to fade away......

Certainly the collection gives a decent flavour of the mainstream music around that year. Thanks for collating it.
