IN THE MOOG

VA - In the MOOG for Rock CD1+CD2 + VA - In the MOOG for Instrumentals + VA - In the MOOG for Space Disco (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)         REPOST

The Moog synthesizer (pronounced /mo?g/ MOHG; often anglicized to /mu?g/ MOOG, though Robert Moog preferred the former) may refer to any number of analog synthesizers designed by Robert Moog or manufactured by Moog Music and is commonly used as a generic term for older-generation analog music synthesizers. The Moog company pioneered the commercial manufacture of modular voltage-controlled analog synthesizer systems in the mid 1960s. The technological development that led to the creation of the Moog synthesizer was the invention of the transistor, which enabled researchers like Moog to build electronic music systems that were considerably smaller, cheaper and far more reliable than earlier vacuum tube-based systems.  The Moog synthesizer gained wider attention in the music industry after it was demonstrated at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967. The commercial breakthrough of a Moog recording was made by Wendy Carlos in the 1968 record Switched-On Bach, which became one of the highest-selling classical music recordings of its era. The success of Switched-On Bach sparked a slew of other synthesizer records in the late 1960s to mid-1970s. Later Moog modular systems featured various improvements, such as a scaled-down, simplified, self-contained musical instrument designed for use in live performance. (Wikipedia)

The MOOG is one of those very versatile instruments that has endured for decades, by its unique sound and some unique applications that stretch beyond just prog rock. The Decemberists are probably the most recent Moog users of this ubiquitous synthesizer. The Moog place new ideas in front of you as all other musical instruments have done before.

The hulking, mindbogglingly complex Moog modular synthesizers that debuted in 1964 reshaped modern music by bringing electronic sounds to the masses. But they were totally inaccessible to the majority of artists – by 1970, only 28 Moog synths were owned by musicians. Most of Moog’s products resided in universities and the studios of large record labels, and were often used for research, corporate jingles or film soundtracks. It was almost unimaginable that synthesizers might soon become a fixture in a huge variety of genres, from pop to jazz to funk to prog rock.  It was mostly used in small quantities in the early days, but those artists who tested the Moog's limits gave us some magnificent art to devour.

For more than five decades’ the artists presented here embraced the sonic possibilities of the Moog, blending their tones into disco, pop, jazz, and rock in all its versions. Presented are 50 tracks of Moog in Rock, 30 tracks of Moog Instrumentals and 30 tracks Moog in Space Disco over 4 separate track lists. Enjoy!

“I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.” John Cage

  2. There are very few forms of music which I do not like,,, I can move effortlessly from Zeppelin to Beethoven, Nirvana to Khalid... but there is nothing that fills me with childish giddiness more than the blurping of an analog synthesizer and the ridiculous arpeggios of a well tempered sequencer.
