LOUIS ARMSTRONG

Louis Armstrong - The Complete Columbia and RCA Victor Studio Sessions 1946-1966 [2021] (7 x CDs)

Louis Armstrong - The Complete Columbia and RCA Victor Studio Sessions 1946-1966 [2021] is a magnificent seven-disc box set that celebrates the studio recordings of the legendary jazz musician and singer for two major labels from 1946 to 1966. It covers his 78s and 45s, three classic albums (Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy, Satch Plays Fats, and Louis and the Good Book), and many rare and unreleased recordings. The box set was released by Mosaic Records in April 2021 and is limited to 3,500 copies. It features Armstrong’s collaborations with other jazz greats such as Jack Teagarden, Earl Hines, Barney Bigard, Trummy Young, Edmond Hall, Billy Kyle, Arvell Shaw, Velma Middleton, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, and Lotte Lenya. The box set showcases Armstrong’s versatility and mastery of various jazz styles such as swing, vocal, ballad, dixieland, and blues. It also dispels the notion that Armstrong was a has-been or a sell-out in his later years, as he continued to play and sing with passion, creativity, and joy. The box set has received critical acclaim from jazz fans and critics alike, who praised its sound quality, historical value, and musical diversity.

This 7-CD boxed set will take you into the studio with Louis Armstrong in a way never before possible. You will hear over three hours of bonus material, including unissued takes, rehearsals and even studio discussions. You will discover how producer George Avakian relied on editing and splicing to create some of the most memorable albums of Armstrong’s career. You will enjoy one of the finest long-playing albums of Armstrong’s entire career: Louis Armstrong Plays W.C Handy, which featured Armstrong’s All Stars in top form. “They’re perfect—they’re my tops,” Armstrong said of the album. You will appreciate the superior sound quality of this set, which utilizes the original RCA Victor metal parts, test pressings of the pre-tape material and reel-to-reel tapes for the Columbia sessions. You will also find a detailed 30,000 word essay from Armstrong authority Ricky Riccardi and over 40 photos from the collections of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, most of which have never been published. This set will surprise you with dozens of insights into Armstrong, the All Stars, and Avakian at work in the studios.

This set will delight you with over three hours of bonus material, including unissued takes, rehearsals and even studio discussions. This set is a treasure trove for any Louis Armstrong fan and is a must-have for any Louis Armstrong fan or jazz lover. (B)

  5. If it wasn't for Louis, I would have never got into Jazz music, or at lease not early in my life. I had the fortune of seeing Mr. Armstrong on TV back in the 60's when I was growing up - this was during the last few years of his life when he was promoting "Hello Dolly" - and I fell in love with his personality and of course, his music. A must have! Thanks!
