French pop is a genre of pop music sung in French. Singers from France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, or other French-speaking countries and regions, particularly contribute to the genre. The genre mainly targets a French-speaking audience, in a considerably small market but largely independent of the English-speaking market. The term French pop can sometimes be applied to French artists singing in English.

The term French pop emphasizes, on the one hand, similarities with the internationally dominating Anglo-Saxon pop music, and, on the other hand, puts certain peculiarities of French pop music in the spotlight - the strongly inspired language of traditional French music and the peculiarities of the history of French pop music.

Until the 1960s, jazz remained the most imported music from the United States. The tradition of French jazz dates back to the 1920s. A well-known celebrity of the genre was, during this period, the dancer, actress and singer Joséphine Baker. The American citizen had already moved to France in the 1920s and adopted French nationality in 1937. The characteristics of the evolution of French pop music extend beyond jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. French jazz musicians such as Barney Wilen contributed particularly to the soundtracks of films known as Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (1958) or Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 (1959).

Throughout the 1960s, French pop was favored by teenagers because of the high cost of 12-inch albums. The simple 45 rpm, previously reserved for jukeboxes, began to impose itself from 1968. Temple of rock 'n' roll at the end of the 1950s, it was at Golf-Drouot that French pop was born in 1966.

While many artists have succeeded in establishing themselves, others have had only one success or even never made it.

Until 1966, despite several original creations (Laisse les filles d'Hallyday, Daniela des Chaussettes Noires, La plus belle pour aller danser written by Aznavour for Sylvie Vartan, etc.), many songs by the new generation of artists were adaptations Anglo-Saxon titles. New fashions appear and young people then dance the twist and the madison. From 1964 the craze for rock 'n' roll stalled and the so-called “variety song” regained its rights; Adamo and Claude François are “the spearhead”. The pioneers of French rock, Eddy Mitchell and Johnny Hallyday evolve towards rhythm and blues, soul and pop (they will return to rock later): Mitchell recorded in 1965 From rock 'n' roll to rhythm 'n' blues and l next year the pop album Seul. As for Hallyday, in 1965 he released the album (very rhythm and blues) Johnny sings Hallyday, then in 1966 the pop album The Lost Generation. If the adaptations lasted beyond the yéyés years, from 1966 a new generation of singers (Jacques Dutronc and his song Et moi, et moi, et moi, Michel Polnareff and his album Love Me, Please Love Me, Antoine and his song Les Élucubrations d'Antoine), later Julien Clerc, François Béranger, Catherine Ribeiro, Gilles Servat, Joan-Pau Verdier) and groups (Triangle, Les Variations, Magma, Zoo, Martin Circus, Au Bonheur des dames) broke with yéyés songs, compose or/and interpret originals, performing in multiple concerts, festivals, then in increasingly large venues.

The French neo-pop wave in the 1980s, a cross between yé-yé lightness and the soulful vagueness of new wave, was marked by the figures of Laurent Voulzy, Lio, Étienne Daho, and the group Niagara. In the 2010s, a new neo-pop generation was born, from Aline to La Femme, from Lescop to Granville (Wikipedia).

A panorama over 7 decades and in 182 songs of "French-style" pop. Please note that some titles come from Belgian (Stromae...) or Swiss (Stephan Eicher) artists. It's a vast cross-over that is not strictly limited to « pop » but also encompasses other styles such as soul, hip hop, rock or electro (HG).
