K SPECIAL, MOJO EXPERTS POLL
VA - MOJO Magazine Presents, The 100 Greatest Singles of All Time (Experts Poll - August 1997) [2023] (6 x CDs)
Mojo (stylised in all caps) is a popular music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom, initially by Emap, and since January 2008 by Bauer. Following the success of the magazine Q, publishers Emap were looking for a title that would cater for the burgeoning interest in classic rock music. The magazine was designed to appeal to the 30 to 45-plus age group, or the baby boomer generation. Mojo was first published on 15 October 1993. In keeping with its classic rock aesthetic, the first issue had Bob Dylan and John Lennon as its first cover stars. Noted for its in-depth coverage of both popular and cult acts, it acted as the inspiration for Blender and Uncut. Many noted music critics have written for it, including Charles Shaar Murray, Greil Marcus, Nick Kent, David Fricke, Jon Savage and Mick Wall. The launch editor of Mojo was Paul Du Noyer and his successors have included Mat Snow, Paul Trynka, Pat Gilbert and Phil Alexander. The current editor is John Mulvey.
While some criticise it for its frequent coverage of classic rock acts such as the Beatles, David Bowie and Bob Dylan, it has nevertheless featured many newer and "left-field" acts. It was the first mainstream magazine in the UK to focus on the White Stripes, and it continues to cover emerging acts. Modern cover stars of recent years have included Lana Del Rey and Arctic Monkeys. Every issue of Mojo published since its inception (apart from Mojo #88 and Mojo #125) has featured an article on Colin Blunstone.
Mojo regularly includes a covermount CD that ties in with a current magazine article or theme. It introduced the Mojo Honours List, an awards ceremony that is a mixture of readers' and critics' awards, in 2004.
More recently, the magazine has taken to publishing many "Top 100" lists, including the subjects of drug songs (Mojo #109), rock epics (Mojo #125), protest songs (Mojo #126) and even the most miserable songs of all time (Mojo #127).
In 1997 two polls were taken to determine the 100 greatest singles of all time. An experts poll in August 1997, followed by a readers poll in December 1997.
MOJO Magazine Presents: The 100 Greatest Singles of All Time (Experts Poll - August 1997) (6CD) (2023)
Compiled by MOJO magazine from top 10 lists supplied by over 100 artists, producers and music industry personalities worldwide.
The 100 greatest singles were voted for by the experts listed on the inside cover of the August 1997 - issue 45. Songs not available on 45s in the UK were disqualified.
In addition to the Top 100, 32 additional singles were listed as 'bubbling under', so I decided to add these as bonus tracks:
Bubbling Under:
• 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon
• A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles
• Ace of Spades - Motörhead
• Alison - Elvis Costello
• Ambition - Subway Sect
• Baby I Need Your Loving - The Four Tops
• Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins
• Born Slippy - Underworld
• Brown Sugar - The Rolling Stones
• Hound Dog / Don't Be Cruel - Elvis Presley
• Get It On - T. Rex
• Good Golly, Miss Molly - Little Richard
• Hit the Road Jack - Ray Charles feat. Margie Hendrix and the Raelettes
• Hotel California - Eagles
• I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) - Aretha Franklin
• I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
• Light My Fire - The Doors
• Livin' for the City - Stevie Wonder
• My Generation - The Who
• Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - The Temptations
• Protection - Massive Attack with Tracey Thorn
• Pyjamarama - Roxy Music
• Rag Doll - The Four Seasons
• Save the Last Dance for Me - The Drifters
• Setting Sun - The Chemical Brothers feat. Noel Gallagher
• Soul Man - Sam & Dave
• The Letter - The Box Tops
• Voodoo Chile - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
• Wake Up Little Susie - The Everly Brothers
• Will You Love Me Tomorrow - The Shirelles
• Without You - Nilsson
• Your Song - Elton John
I put in hundreds of hours of research and collecting all the songs together to compile this collection and paid particular close attention into how the original singles were released, using many hard to find correct 7" single versions, edits and mono mixes. No later remixes, re-recordings, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here! Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment. Almost 8 hours of many of the greatest singles ever recorded!

Thanks for this Butterbuy, normally I'd pass on this as I have many of the tracks already, scattered all over the place in numerous folders on my HDD. However I'm driving up to Khon Kaen next Tuesday, it's a 4 hour drive, so this lot will make for fun driving music. I'll bung the lot on a flash drive and let it rip.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great mix and a good choice.
DeleteEnjoy the trip to Khon Kaen. Stay safe.
Cheers
