VA - Power Pop Anthems: The 125 Greatest Power Pop Songs of All Time (Updated Remastered Expanded Super Deluxe Edition) [2023] (6 x CDs) + Bonus Dwight Twilley.

Dwight Twilley Band - Sincerely (1976) Twilley Don't Mind (1977) (2007)

Dwight Twilley - Between the Cracks - Volume One (1999)

Dwight Twilley - Soundtrack (2011)

Thinking about Dwight Twilley today, I decided to update my power pop compilation with many better sounding, higher quality digital remasters.

I added another 25 tracks by a number of bands who were suggested by visitors to your blog. The dB's, Purple Hearts, The Chords, The Spongetones, Jellyfish, along with many others have now been added to make a sensational 125 track collection of the very best power pop songs ever released.  Now over 6 1/2 hours of classic power pop!

Following hundreds of hours of extensive research reading through critic's polls, readers and listeners polls, online discussion forums votes (Steve Hoffman), Will Birch insight and favourites listed, Wikipedia info, my own recollections and favourites, I have finally settled upon my 125 Greatest Power Pop Songs of All Time collection.

Pete Townshend, the guitarist and principal songwriter for The Who, is credited as the originator of the name “power pop.” He used the phrase to describe the type of music The Who performed in the late 1960s - upbeat, catchy, hook-driven - but the name wouldn’t catch on until the 1970s. "Pictures of Lily" was included in the Who album Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, a compilation of previously released singles. Townshend coined the term "power pop" when he used it to describe the song in a May 1967 interview with NME.

Compiled after exhaustive and extensive research, these are the top 125 songs which are mentioned and feature most on many power pop discussion forums, critics and fan lists.

There has never been a really good official power pop compilation with a thorough overview from the 60s thru the 00s, and like my previous 'greatest' collections, my goal was to include the very, very best of the genre, the cream of the crop, and to add a number of tracks you just never see on compilations due to licensing, music rights issues, etc.  No later remixes, re-recordings, 'stereo enhanced' or live bootleg versions here!  Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

  2. Hello K and BB ...
I suspect I have a power pop weakness (or is that a power pop strength? Yeah, that's it!) as I am drawn to the sounds of catchy hook-laden harmonic pop and melodic buzzing guitars. Like most genres, it had existed before there was a genre for it. I have found the definition of power pop varies between different sets of ears. Genres overlap and there are definitely differing styles of power pop running from the punk-ish to the more Beatlesque and lots in-between. There are no hard and fast rules. The Left Banke's "She May Call You Up Tonight" is wondrously both Baroque Pop AND Power Pop! This collection satisfies one of my personal criteria up front... any compilation with Edison Lighthouse's "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" has something to offer. For sure tho there are not enough good power pop compilations and one assembled by someone as capable, caring, and knowledgeable as K should not and cannot be overlooked... Not to mention the Bonus Dwight Twilley (which I just did). Powerful thanks K (for this, and all the others) and BB for making it possible!

    1. Thanks, mrRadio.
I am sure K will be pleased with your assessment. I thank you for highlighting the work K does. Your description of his excellence is agreed (...by someone as capable, caring, and knowledgeable as K should not and cannot be overlooked). And may I add that as a visitor you have a wonderful eye for detail and are respectful in a manner that I've always appreciated. Enjoy revisiting this great set.
      Cheers.

  3. An excellent update with so many valuable additions, K! The occasion may be sad (in a better world Twilley's "Im on fire" would be on every radio at least once every day), this compilation is the exact opposite! Thanks & best as always, TC

  4. Thanks K for the remake. I always thought of power pop as the sound of The Searchers.
Thanks mrRadio for putting it so well.

  5. I've ignored genre for many years now, and have simply classified my music depending on what appeals to me in the mood at the time. That helps searching, but I have to decide my mood before I can search. But that's my problem. Many thanks again to both K and your goodself. Another keepable compilation.

  6. I love power pop, and have really enjoyed the collections on this blog. I'm sure this one will be the icing on the cake! Nice to see American Girl included, as this is such a classic of the genre. Dwight Twilley sings backup vocals on it, too. (Petty and Twilley were friends and briefly labelmates; on Dwight Twilley's album The Jungle, Tom Petty adds backup vocals and Mike Campbell from the Heartbreakers plays guitar.) Thank you so much, BB and K!

  7. What an absolute superb collection of tunes. Thanks to K and to you, Butterboy. In the early 2000s, I played drums and sang vocal harmonies in a power pop band, though I didn't know that expression at the time. I celebrate that period as the highlight of my music playing life. Melodic songs with oomph and sunshine harmonies should be on everyone's radar.

    1. Cool... the drummer is hugely influential. I believe he or she can literally make or break a tune.
So many songs (all genre) where the drum patterns/sounds/beats are what make it a keeper.
Catchy Melodic songs with oomph and Sunshine Harmonies is now my new go-to description. That's Perfect!

  11. Hi BB, great collection! Some really obscure tracks. There is one track on the "6 CD": "Black and White" has a problem when trying to unpack it. It gets the message: "108 Black and White.mp3 invalid compressed data to extract." Maybe the original file is good.
