Doris Day - The Real... Doris Day [2012] (3 x CD's)

DORIS DAY

Doris Day - The Real... Doris Day [2012] (3 x CD's)

This 2012 collection of 69 songs on three discs is truly awesome! All songs were mastered from the original Columbia recordings and sound great. Since this collection spans her career (recordings from the 40's, 50's and 60's), a special kudos must go out to the unlisted balance engineer; a very smooth and even run! Classic track after classic track, like The Very Thought Of You (1950), Dream A Little Dream Of Me (1957), Sentimental Journey (1945 original; the 1963 second version is erroneously listed as an additional 8th track!), It's Magic (1948) and Happy Talk (1961) to name a few.  You just about can't go wrong with Doris Day. I have yet to hear her sing without putting her all into the song, and Doris Day's "all" holds your attention in a vise. This is a wide-ranging collection including many of her standards along with some you may never have heard before. The first eight tracks on Disc #3 are from her great film role, "Calamity Jane," in which she overwhelmed Howard Keel, who was nobody's idea of a second fiddle. If you get just one Day album, make it this one. (Amazon)

  1. Thank you for this one, Butter - it scratches an indulgent itch. I'm curious about some of 1950s-era pop sounds that I just missed being born into, and which were still getting plenty of airplay in my youngest years. So this may bring back some memories... especially needful, the older this aging child gets!!

    1. Hi Aging Child,
We all need our nostalgia fix from time to time, I remember my mother singing "The Yellow Rose of Texas" around the house when I was a tiny child. So when I hear that song now it releases a joy in my mind that cant be achieved any other means. Amazing how music and memories meld.
I don't feel my mind is getting older yet and I feel like I did in my twenties, the only problem is my body doesn't agree.

Thanks for commenting on this post. Enjoy Doris' soothing tones.

      Cheers.

    2. ...likely around the time I was wondering, with Patti Page (from some years before my arrival!) how much that doggie in the window was.

Thank you for the research-nudge, by the way, Butter! My own mother wasn't (and still isn't, bless her) a singer. But she'd wake us up for school some mornings *singing* the "Reveille". I'd always thought they were her own light-hearted words; but digging around online just now, I see she was quoting/paraphrasing Irving Berlin's parody, "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning!" He wrote it in 1918, the same year our mother's father came home from basic training for WWI (ten years before she was born), just barely missing out on going Over There. He must have sung it around the house himself, getting the kids up, mornings, and my mother remembered and turned it over to us some fifty years after. I'll have to ask her about that. Thanks for the memory (to quote Bob Goday)!
