VA - Rockin' Memphis [2008] (4 x CD's)

MEMPHIS ROCK & ROLL

VA - Rockin' Memphis [2008] (4 x CDs)

During the fifties, Memphis was the hub for rockabilly and R&B. This 4 x CD set celebrates the music that came out of Memphis in the early to late 1950's when the place was really rockin'. Just some of the artist included are Elvis, Johnny Burnette, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and many obscure names that make this a collector's treat. This compilation looks at the music recorded in Memphis and its environs by native Memphians and shows the stupendous effect the sounds had on the world of popular music. Compiled by acknowledged expert Adam Komorowski, this set follows in the footsteps of Proper's many successful R&B/Rock 'N' Roll boxed sets. This great compilation has 118 songs from the 1950's, expertly re-engineered plus a 55-page booklet giving lots of background info. This compilation is excellent. The first disc titled "Rock the Bottle" is worth the price alone. I would recommend it to anyone, whether you are just getting into this style of music or are already an avid fan of the early Memphis sound. It was nice to see other songs by Jackie Brenston other than Rocket 88. Don't waste any more time.  (Amazon)

  1. Thank you for this one, Butter! I've been to Memphis three times, including an unguided walking tour of Beale Street and points beyond, with a stop at Sun Studios, which has a little restaurant and gift shop on the first floor. Among the pictures on the wall - Elvis, yes; Johnny Cash; Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. - I spotted one of Memphis Minnie. My Memphis music of choice is the 1920s-30s... but there's plenty of 1950s Memphian sounds in my vault as well... and you've just nicely enriched them. Thanks again for the music, and the memory.
