CALYPSO MAGIC
VA - London Is the Place for Me 1-8 [2002-2019] (8 x CD's)
''Long before there was reggae, or even ska, the official soundtrack of black Britain was calypso. Not just records coming from "back home" into newly-arrived immigrant communities, but a genuine London/Port Of Spain hybrid with some of the Caribbean's greatest entertainers composing songs about Lyon's Corner Houses, riding on the Underground, nosy landladies and--of course--the British weather. Calypso provided a vibrant, exciting, often hilarious commentary on 1950s London life. This music couldn't have happened anywhere else, and yet it is customarily forgotten. Until now, that is. Honest Jon's has unearthed recordings by the likes of Lord Kitchener, Lord Beginner and The Lion and put them together as London Is The Place For Me. A timely reminder, in such proximity to the 40th anniversary of Jamaican independence, that 50 years ago the voice of Britain's West Indian communities had a distinctly Trinidadian lilt. Spin a few of these tunes and you'll find out as much about life in those days as you could from any textbook--and you can dance to them.''
So these releases are is a timely reminder that (as Bob Dylan also demonstrated subsequently) there is more to life than romance and sex and can be much more to lyrics than the "love" and lust that preoccupies most commercial music. (Graham Colombé)

Thanks BB. It is 95F and humid..You could melt just sitting in the shade. Selling my soul to the air conditioner/Electric company. Stay cool pal.
ReplyDeleteHi ProfessorCalculus,
DeleteThe Calypso should make you even cooler.
That temperature is the average during my summer period. So I guess we are used to it, Strip down and stay cool.
Cheers.
Thanks a lot, Butterboy! A very valuable musical (and political) collection, not only historically, also at that very moment in 2020 - just take Vol. 8, track 21, as a telling example ... Best, TC
ReplyDeleteHi TC,
DeleteThanks for the comment. These tracks ar far more than just enjoyable.
Cheers.

Hi Il Commendatore.
DeleteThey just seem right to post today.
Cheers.
Thanks BB, had first four of these years ago but the harddrive died. A friend had most of these as 45's but he died. Life eh!
ReplyDeleteHi Paul,
DeleteI am happy that these Cd's help you reconnect. To remember you friend due to seeing this post shows that you miss them. Music is great for the soul. Life can be cruel...
Cheers.
Thanks for these, BB. I had to get them through the single PixelDrain (PhoneBatteryDrain more like...) file, but it was worth it.
ReplyDeleteHi Paolo, Good music requires patience. I am glad you persevered. Its a great set, very enjoyable.
DeleteI am surprised you had battery drain as the pixeldrain downloads are generally really fast. It is a big file though.
Cheers.
