QUINCY JONES

Quincy Jones - Q-Jazz More Than 100 Legendary Recordings 1956-1960 [2013] (10 x CD's)

The legendary producer, arranger and musical jack of all trades Quincy Jones celebrates his 80th birthday on March 14, 2013. As a special gift to “Q” and his fans, this 10-CD set was put together with his legendary jazz recordings. The recordings on this box span a sheet over ten (mostly out of print, always rare) original albums and four CDs with rare live recordings of his American and the "European Big Band" from 1956 to 1960. They present the exciting ones on over 100 pieces jazz roots of the musician with the most Grammy nominations (79 in total, 27 of which were record-breaking!); a man who later brought masterpieces from Michael Jackson to Frank Sinatra to the music world.

Originally an ambitious trumpeter in the band of Lionel Hampton (and a good friend of Ray Charles), Quincy Delight Jones Jr. had his first success as an arranger - he wrote for legends like Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Count Basie and even as a teenager Duke Ellington. He started recording under his own name in 1956, shortly before moving to Paris to study under Nadia Boulanger and Oliver Messiaen. If you hear the exciting and moving music in this collection, it quickly becomes apparent that Quincy Jones was a real asset to the music world as a young man. There can only be one reason why the father of seven children left his beloved jazz world in the mid-1960s in order not only to earn spurs in pop realms. "We had the best jazz band on the planet and were still starving," Quincy Jones recalls. “Then I realized that there was music and also the music business. If I wanted to survive, I had to learn to distinguish between the two.”

Feat. Gerry Mulligan, Don Byas, Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Benny Bailey, Lucky Thompson, Stephane Grappelli, Kenny Clarke, Art Pepper, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Carl Perkins, Mel Lewis, Billy Taylor, Shelly Manne and many more. (Amazon)

  1. Thanks so much for this, Butterboy. It's so easy to become obsessed with the great players of the jazz world (and Lord knows there were heaps of them) and forget about all the great music the arrangers like Quincy Jones, Nelson Riddle, Kenyon Hopkins and Marty Paich (just to name a few) were responsible for.
