Kat's Karavan - The History of the John Peel Show [2009] (4 x CD's)

THE JOHN PEEL SHOW

Kat's Karavan - The History of the John Peel Show [2009] (4 x CD's)

This lavishly packaged hard back book style set contains singles and Peel session recordings by some of John's favorite artists. Disc One highlights include the Misunderstood and the recently discovered Peel Session version of Free's 'Walk in My Shadow'. This is one of four unreleased versions on this disc; the others are by John Cale, Medicine Head and the Boomtown Rats. Alongside many long deleted rarities. Disc Two's highlight has to be John's only appearance on record, singing backing vocals to Altered Image's 'Song Sung Blue'. It sits alongside unreleased recordings by Elvis Costello, the Cure, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Julian Cope and Soundgarden. Disc Three features unreleased recordings by Hole, Thievery Corporation, Marxman, Tiger and Justin Berkovi. Disc Four Has nine unreleased recordings by Bloc Party, Mercury Rev, And You Will Know US By the Trail of Dead, Bong Ra, the Datsuns, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Hellacopters, Soledad Brothers and Your Code Name Is; Milo.

Great set of tunes and, like any Peel Session, I'm still discovering new bands through him. Only gripe is that the compilers decided to wait so long into the first CD to have the first recorded word of Peelie appear. Could have easily started with a "this one comes in quietly" just to start things off. Other than that, if you're a fan of the late great John Peel this is a must for the collection. Some rare stuff here from the heart of a rare soul.  British gentlemen of a certain age will find this an essential collection to own. Sure, you'll find much to quibble about the selection, which is probably as quirky as the Peel show itself, but don't let that hold you back. (Amazon)

  6. Please allow me to recommend the very first song on this comp to everyone.
The Misunderstood - I Can Take You To The Sun is perhaps the greatest psych 45 ever released.
From Riverside, California...The Misunderstood were robbed of world fame by the hand of Fate. But, it wasn't because John Peel didn't try. He gave them their first glimpse of fame when he worked as a DJ in Southern California as John Ravenscroft...then sent them to London where they signed to Fontana and recorded the single. It proves that the mid sixties really was an Aquarian age and that local kids really could participate. I just read a fascinating book about the band called 'Like, Misunderstood' in which John Peel(Ravenscroft) features heavily. The entire psych scene is forever indebted to the man, by virtue of this song alone. The band hit their stride and there is much more to be heard but this compilation guarantees to be a ride on the nose-cone of a rocket based on SONG #1!
    I'm done...
    Thank you, Butterboy
    KC

  7. John Peel made me discovr Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan - - you might have a track i never had - I it heard on his show on the BBC in 1980 on my radio ((approx) --- from memory (vague) ali mullah ali mullah dum dum - but that was just a phrase that i rememmered not sure the name of the chant - John Peel (and you) open my ears to music I never heard before - FR BS (but only if it comes to mind butterboy genious)

    1. Hi Black,

The song is Ali Maula Ali Maula Ali Dam Dam and is from the 1988 album titled Devotional Songs. I will post it here late for you.

      Cheers

FYI A qawwali sung in Divine devotional spirit. The fervor of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his voice is unmistakable in this song sung in praise of Ali - considered by many as the First Sufi and thus the source of Sufism.
