VA - Honey Honey, The Sound of Bubblegum Pop [2012] (3 x CD's)

Sony Music TV UK's 2012 compilation Honey Honey: The Sound of Bubblegum Pop is an excellent budget-price collection of fizzy pop hits from the late '60s and early '70s. Most of these are what's conventionally known as bubblegum -- the bright soundtrack of AM radio, often sung by Tony Burrows -- but the comp expands just a bit so it encompasses early harbingers of bubblegum like the Monkees and the Four Seasons, girl group superstars the Ronettes and the Supremes, international superstars like ABBA, and glam stompers from T. Rex and Sweet. This wide net means Honey Honey winds up sounding more like the radio of the '70s than most of these comps: it's got one-hit wonders next to the titans, a bunch of classics surrounded by glorious trash, and it's a lot of fun because of that. This is a weird collection - I Fought the Law bubblegum?? - but it has so many childhood guilty pleasures that I sure won't quibble!

  6. Ok, I gotta chime in here. You know how strongly I feel about labels... not very. The mistake here was using the term Bubblegum to label this music. I enjoy the tunes but got good laughs while doing so and contemplating the bubblegummyiness of each. If that was the compiler's intention... well good job there guys. What I really think is those behind this are a tad wack-a-doo. I would bet a biscuit no one involved in assembling this crazy comp actually lived thru the "bubblegum" era. Someone doesn't realize it's a style and not a time frame. This is a bizarre collection of something. At least they didn't include "Sugar, Sugar", "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy", or something else off the Buddah label to make their point!
It's a nice share though BB! Thanks

    1. Hi mrRadio,
I'm with YOU on this one. They cast a very wide net indeed. You don't see many "Bubblegum" (?) comps like this one. Some great songs in this lot though.
      Cheers.
