VA - Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 01 [2014] + Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 02 [2016] + Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 03 [2021] (6 x CD's)

INSTRUMENTAL SOUL

VA - Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 01 [2014] + Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 02 [2016] (6 x CD's) + Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 03 [2021]

VA - Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 01  [2014]     Instrumental soul music is hard to describe. Unlike soul music we all know with great vocals, instrumental soul music is harder to define. But this set does a good job of collecting music that has the sound and feel of "soul", late night smooch music, a little jazzy, gut-bucket honking, stinging guitar, grooving organ, it's all here.  Included are instrumentals from people like Ray Charles, The Mar-Keys, James Brown, Ray Bryant, Jimmy McGriff, Allen Toussaint, Mac Rebenak (pre-Dr. John), Freddie King, Booker T and The MGs, Ike Turner, and other well known artists. But also here (and some are real finds) are great sides by many lesser known or unknown performers who up the instrumental soul quotient greatly. Naming names would be pretty pointless unless you're a deep collector--but included are sides by Roosevelt Fountain ("Red Pepper"), Nat Bagby ("Grinding"), The Barons ("Jay Walk"), Porgy & The Polka Dots ("Say Yeah"), The Ohio Untouchables ("Hot Stuff") with guitarist Robert Ward, The Twistin' Kings ("Congo (Pt1)"), Googie Rene ("Side Track"), and several others. But known or not these people can dish out some serious soul--instrumental style. (Amzon)

VA - Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 02 [2016]      This is another sensational 2CD collection of percolating instrumentals, all of them in the "soul style" as indicated in the album's title, covering jazz, blues, and regular R&B. From the first track to the last one, this is sheer listening pleasure.  Whether you enjoy guitar-based songs or ones with plenty of funky organ runs, this collection has plenty of treats for your listening pleasure. There are also tracks featuring harmonica and the distinctive double bass playing of Motown legend James Jamerson.  Another compliment I can give this collection is how many songs are included that I've never heard before. I own thousands of CDs, many of them in these soul/R&B styles, but I hadn't heard most of these tunes, even ones by name artists such as Phil Upchurch, John Lee Hooker, King Curtis, Nine Simone (yes, it's an instrumental too!), Jack McDuff, and even one of my favorite underrated musicians Dave Hamilton. (Amazon)

VA - Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol. 03 [2021]      Instrumentals Soul-Style Vol 3 1965-1966. Funk was the name of the game in '66 with a noticeably slower tempo than in the year before. Some of these tracks were made as dance records, others as records for DJs to talk over between hits, and others still were B-side fillers where the band just jammed on. These are great grooves put down by top-flight musicians. Grab that tin of talcum powder and step on out! (Amazon)

Completeness in music is nice to have. More difficult to come by in life though.
