  7. Wow! Been looking for thsi since viewing the new Sly Stone Documentary on HULU. I moved to SF in 1978 and attended the College for Recording Arts run by Leo De Gar Kulka at GSR from 1979-80. This is from a Facebook post of another student's memories, - enjoy!! ---- " Before Sly Stone hit with the Family Stone he had an incredible livelihood as one of the Bay Area's top radio DJ's at KDIA and KSOL. Then the wunderkind at 19 was lead producer for Tom Donahue's Autumn Records. Producing big hits by SF'S Bobby Freeman C'mon and Swim and The Beau Brummels Laugh Laugh.
Early in the doc I was blown away to hear Grace Slick describing her relationship with him in '65 as a producer of The Great Society, the band she was in before The Jefferson Airplane, producing an early version of Somebody To Love. She could not believe his genius at playing keyboards, guitar, bass and drums.
They recorded at San Francisco's first large professional recording studio Golden State Recorders on Harrison Street. There are some great shots in the film of him playing all of the above mentioned instruments along with shots of Grace and company in the studio.
It brought back some memories for me of that studio. 50 yrs ago in 1975 I took a year long course in music production, recording and all aspects of the music business in the inaugural class of College For Recording Arts directed by Leo de gar Kulka who built and ran the studio. He had had already an amazing career in LA engineering records for Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke and other legends. He moved North and built GSR in '64 and engineered early recordings for Donahue's Autumn Records of not only The Great Society but The Emergency Crew or later to be known as the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, plus early Sly and the Family Stone among many others. The school also brought in other engineers, producers and music lawyers to teach the classes. I learned a lot. As an added pleasure it was fascinating to hear Leo, quite the Raconteur tell stories of his experiences working with Sinatra, Cooke and of course Sly. An extra thrill would be when he would go into the studio's archive and play us some of Sly and The Family Stone's original 4 track recordings on the big studio speakers that Sly used to mix the recordings. Another cool experience was a two day field trip to LA where we got to visit Gold Star studios where many hits by the Wrecking Crew's Wall of Sound, The Ronettes, Righteous Bros etc. were recorded plus a tour of Charlie Chaplin's film studio that was by then the state of the art A&M recording studios. Talk about cultural history.
We usually held classes in the big main studio of GSR where all of the great early psychedelic music had been recorded. One time we had to move to a smaller studio for a class because next store we could hear Michael Bloomfield and friends record a sound track for an upcoming Mitchell Bros. epic porn film LOL. I have so many memories of that year. It had a lasting impression on me where it helped me 35 yrs later to produce two cd's. Here are some pics of Leo engineering, and surprising! the actual original 16 track recorder used on many of the recordings and that we used in class. Grace Slick in our class room (studio) ten years earlier. I was only able to find one pic of Sly playing drums at Golden State Recorders. Not many people remember this studio after the arrival of Columbia Records first West Coast studio, Wally Heider Studios
and Sausalito's world famous Record Plant. As they say it holds a warm place in my heart and memories. Another great San Francisco landmark. I can't believe it was 50 yrs ago! Sly Lives! trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeKg69eOsAk&t=12s " !!
